Strange layer shifts
Hi all,
One of my minis has started to do this seemingly random layer shift across the whole print about 20hrs in. At first I thought the base plate had shifted but repetition has shown that this is an issue with the printer. Neither of my other 2 minis are doing this. Any ideas?
RE: Strange layer shifts
My list of commmon causes for layer shifts (although some apply more to the Mk3S):
- Grub screws on X motor not properly tightened. One has to be tightened against the flat side of the motor shaft!
- Belt not correctly tightened. Use this tension meter to get it right: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/46639
- X carriage over-squeezed. Loosen the back plate on the X carriage axis.
- Nozzle hit an obstacle. Some patterns such as grid have lines that cross within one layer. This can lead to little pile-ups at the intersection points, in particular if you have slight overextrusion, which in turn can lead to the nozzle catching at those pile-ups. See https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/infill-patterns_177130/
- Zip ties on the wire bundle on the back of the extruder not properly positioned, so they or the cables hit the model.
If this happens consistently on any model, I'd suspect some physical obstruction. A belt issue should manifest itself with more random patterns. Maybe bearings are binding up at some point. Perhaps partially disassemble the printer and repack bearings.

RE: Strange layer shifts
Thanks for the tips, I think it is going to result in a rebuild unfortunately as you suggest. It's not just this model, it's any model once it gets to this height.
