Recommended extruder for the Mini?

Been out of the loop on what's on the market. Got the Mini when it first came out and used it for a while, but never managed to get it working properly, as the nozzle kept clogging.

I want to solve that issue and think a major issue is the weak extruder, because whenever the nozzle is clogged, I can still push the filament through manually. So either better grip or higher torque extruder should do the trick of printing more reliable.

The Bondtech IFS dual drive extruder for the mini is my only recommended upgrade for the Mini. Or the Trianglelabs clone, if you don't need an integrated filament sensor. Both are excellent. I have them on all my minis and haven't had to adjust the idler once in years, using a wide range of filaments.

It does seem like the replacement extruders come without an extruder motor and instead just connect to the original prusa motor. Is this correct?

RE:

With Bondtech IFS you reuse original Prusa motor.

With other brands it's worth to double check what is in the package that you buy.
Also worth to check assembly manuals.

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

RE: Recommended extruder for the Mini?

Both Bondtech and Trianglelabs reuse the Prusa motor. Never had an issue with it myself. The only clogs I've had after installing the dual drive extruders were utterly self-inflicted, such as trying to load PLA after running high temp filaments such as ASA without cleaning the hotend with cleaning filament or loading at the higher temperature.

RE:

I also mounted the original Prusa stepper on my selfmade flexar extruder. Working since years without any issue.

The idler spring i replaced with 2 strong N52 magnets.

Have you tried cleaning the teeth on the Extruder gear? I have printed PLA, PETG and PETG-PC blends with my Stock Mini and it has not missed a step. Neither on 0.25, 0.4 or 0.6.

Yes, I have tried various things over the years.

  • I have cleaned the teeth properly.
  • Adjusted the idler tension by removing the coupling to the hotend to just feed filament through, then starting at zero tension to gradually increase it, until it fully grips the filament.
  • Doing cold-pulls.
  • Using various filaments from PLA to PETG.
  • Printing at 15-20 degrees hotter than normal to lower pressure
  • Doing a complete de-assembly of the extruder.

Have you checked that the nozzle is correctly tightened against the heatbrake?

And also checked the PFTE tub in the heatbrake for damage?

The triangle land extruder is on its way.

Yes, I have checked that the nozzle sits tight  and also replaced the PTFE tube in the heartbreak, incase I am incapable of detecting a damaged PTFE tube.

Unfortunately none of it helped. Now it's gonna be a replacement to hopefully solve this issue.

Got the Trianglelabs extruder now installed for a while and it works flawlessly. Finally, I can just hit print and not have to worry about any clogging issues anymore.
