I have successfully tested an UPS using 2 car batteries in series. It works pretty well and is really simple, but has some limitations (no monitoring, batteries need manual charging and have to be disconnected before). The most expensive components (excluding batteries) are compatible connectors to the power supply/printer input.

I will post details in a seperate thread at a later point.
