RE: Problems unloading filament? FW 4.0.1

@wdgeek

I documented downgrading at https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/guide-how-to-downgrade-your-prusa-mini-firmware/ , and I did successfully downgrade 4.0.1 to 4.0.0 (and then, because I had no issues with 4.0.1, upgraded back to that version).

Part of the reason why some have failed previously to downgrade is that if the firmware currently installed is the same as or newer than what is on the USB stick, it ignores the USB's firmware unless you manually activate the updater by pressing the click wheel twice on the Bootloader screen (which I believe I was the first to figure out). So, downgrading "failed" in the sense that it isn't as automatic as a software update is.

@g-j-sieben

That information on downgrading/upgrading the firmware on the Mini is very useful.

I have saved your information if I ever consider doing any upgrading or downgrading of the firmware in the future.

THANKS......

@jim-m

I have only had the problem with PETG. Never PLA.

I am experiencing more failures when attempting to unload filament after a print. When I manage to pull the filament out, I observe that the filament strand is damaged as per image. My suspicion is that this then leads to the extruder gear losing grip at that point when retracting. Has anyone experienced this in the past and if so what are your recommended actions?

Hi Guys

Very happy with my Mini, yes it does have 'querks' but i'm happily printing some great stuff.

I dont unload the filament until i need to change it for something else (PETG/diff colour etc), but i ALWAYS purge between prints if it has been idle for more tham 10-15 mins.

When i change fillament i ALWAYS purge first, this clears any filament that has cooled, i immidiatly unload after the purge (the filament is still hot) and i have not had any issues so far.

However, i still cant change filament mid print, which is anoying because i want to print some raised text on a print in a different colour, i think this is firmware issue and i await the next release before trying again

I really do suspect that these machines are not reading the correct temps for the hot end. If the hot end is not hot enough, then you end up with cold filament blob on the top of the hot end that can not be run back out for a filament change. But if you just printed, or purge, you are pushing some filament into the lower, hotter part of the hot end. As a result this sort of works.

My mini seems to read about 20 degrees low. This is enough to cause lots of problems.

I suggest this is exactly what you all are running into. Instead of your hotend being 215 for PLA, it is closer to 195.
