Newbie Question: Z-Offset and Layer Height

I am completely new to 3d printing, i have been print for the last couple of months.  I have just been experimenting with different layer heights. Usually i am printing with 0.15 Quality setting which works good.  I have been trying to print with 0.2 and the only way i can get it to work is to tune the z-offset in order to get it to stick otherwise i can see gaps in the first layer.

Couple of questions:

  1. Is it normal to have to change the Z-Offset when moving to different layer heights i.e 0.15 Quality  -> 0.2 Speed?
  2. Is it better practice to have the z-offset changed within the profiles then having it adjusted within the printer

Just for further reference I am using the PrusaSlicer for all of my printing.

RE: Newbie Question: Z-Offset and Layer Height

Welcome to the forum.

Z-offeset shouldn't be changed between 0.20 and 0.15 mm profile. In the default setup both profiles print the first layer at 0.20 mm height and there should be no difference when printing first layer.

Z-offset is best tuned on the printer, I never change it in the slicer (slicer z-offset = 0).

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉
