Mini Connectivity Discussion

So we know that the new Mini has an ethernet port and also an optional wifi adapter in the pipeline.

But to what end?

Boards like the Duet Wifi have a built in web server and can be controlled directly via a PC / phone/ tablet browser. Will the Mini have the same functionality, which will essentially make Raspberry Pi's and Octoprint obsolete for this new machine?

Or will it need a software app for control like Pronterface?

Or will it even be controllable via PrusaSlicer?

Enquiring minds want more info!

RE: Mini Connectivity Discussion

I assume they will begin with a similar approach as the did with the SL1. File transfer through PrusaSlicer and a web monitor without controls.

Then it will evolve over time.

Im keen to learn more about it, I guess time will tell all and I hope in the lead up to distribution the information will come through.

In one of the other threads someone had a link to the type of wifi card required, i hope Prusa confirm any specific details around compatibility if any issues arise.

I would love to see the webcam mods be officially released for Prusa printers because after seeing some youtube clips of people having remote viewing of their printers it looked damn awesome from a "i can go do housework and quick glance at my phone and see all is well and still printing correctly" perspective.

Respect the fact everyone is entitled to have an opinion, you dont have to like it or hate it, just accept its theirs and not yours and you will be ok!

file transfer per slicer PE is actually workig, with pi and octoprint. this setup works for me so well at the moment, i'd rather would like it to do it with the new mini the same way, and not to have the mk3s only via octoprint accesible from far away (e.g. monitoring when i'm at work), and the new mini only via prusa dedicated software, so that i have 2 apps or 2 websites i have to monitor simultanously.

in the clip I saw, it looks like an ESP8266 module

Maybe the firmware will show us what to expect.

But I don't think it will be a full website. I don't think there is enough space on the chip for all the files. So maybe only an API which can be controlled by creative web-developers ^.^

@saij

Or this is where their production-farm solution takes over, thus necessitating the extra umph on the buddy board.

Other projects have used this interface: https://github.com/luc-github/ESP3D-WEBUI

I have no clue whether this is something PR is considering using but it is, for example, the UI of choice for ESP32_GRBL project: https://github.com/bdring/Grbl_Esp32

ESP32 is far more powerful than ESP8266 though.

ESP-LINK is another solid project for ESP8266: https://github.com/jeelabs/esp-link

That's what I'm hoping for. Being able to print at higher speeds from Octoprint would be ideal. No idea if this will be a native protocol, or a simple IP-to-serial conversion, but either would be most welcome.

I hope that, like octoprint, there's a command line tool for sending jobs to the printer, as that would make it easy for any slicer, GUI or command line, to send gcode files to the printer. And if could also query the printer's status, that'd allow for automation of print jobs across a printer farm, which would be very useful in a large scale production environment. Heck, if the web services are simple, it could even be curl.

I would like to see some SAMBA features in there so I can manage all the gcode files.

Being able to manage files easily is a great idea. For me, any protocol is okay: NFS, FTP, SMB/CIFS, ...

in the video : ERRF video you'll hear an employee from Prusa explain that the Wifi interface is a standard (ESP01 or ESP01S -- difference is the amount of memory on board -- for about 3 US$) and that the (web)interface on the printer eventually will have all the features of Octoprint

Nice!  Between Parusament and software development, they are really becoming a soup-to-nuts shop without freezing out the ecosystem that’s built up around their open sourced hardware.
