Dumb Question About the Default 0.4mm Nozzle

I have the standard 0.4mm nozzle that came with my Mini and I was wondering, how does that correlate to the different default print settings of  ULTRADETAIL, DETAIL, QUALITY, etc.?  Do I need a different nozzle to print in the DETAIL or ULTRADETAIL range?

Thanks.

Best Answer by Neophyl:

No.  Nozzle size determines the maximum level of detail in the x/y planes.  Layer height settings determine detail in the Z axis.

There are very few dumb questions, there are plenty of people though who dont ask questions who could be classed as dumb though 🙂

If you haven't already then I would suggest reading through the PS Knowledge base https://help.prusa3d.com/en/category/prusaslicer_204

and also the general help articles about your printer model https://help.prusa3d.com/en/

Nozzle vs. XY resolution vs. Z resolution

The nozzle you use affects what layer heights are available to you (z resolution), the smallest possible corner radius and the smallest line width (XY resolution).

The print profiles do mainly differ in layer height, infill and speed settings. If you have selected the correct printer profile, all available print profiles should work.

If you change the nozzle size, you will need to change the printer profile and will get a new set of print profiles for a different set of layer heights.

All that has been said is spot on, but from a practical viewpoint I have never seen any improvement in print quality going below 0.1 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle.
