I was settled on Hatchbox and thats all I used for the last year but now in COVID times its doubled in price on amazon Canada so I just sourced some Standard PLA 4043D from filaments.ca its actually rather good. I would go as far to say better than the Hatchbox, I only print PLA and this much cheaper filament is hitting the spot. 

I have also tried AMZ3D and thats not bad either about the same as Hatchbox, I got white and its a little off white compared to Hatchbox white.

I wouldn't write off Aurarum too quickly. They're a well regarded Australian filament manufacturer and also make Wombot printers.

 

Give them a call. They should be able to help you with some settings to try. As you said, you're new to 3D printing and it is more likely you (no offence intended) and not the filament.

 

You can also give another respected Australian producer a go - 3D Fillies.

 

Their PLA is under $27 a spool, but they're  $140 minimum spend for free shipping versus $110 from Aurarum. 

@morphias - 3d Fillies - I cant see whether they are australian made, or just warehouse and sell?  Have you had personal experience with their stuff on a prusa?

Bit late to replying on this, but only just seen the post... 

I've been using the 3DF stuff almost exclusively for business parts for about 2years now (running on Mk3S's), no issues at all. The PLA+ is great, with a more satin finish than the eSun gloss. If you can, buying the 8pack saves a little more $$. I also find the PETG better than eSun as well, seem to get better quality parts with the 3DF materials. 

Having said that, having moved to ADL almost a year ago, I've moved more towards what the guys over at 3D Printing Solutions offer for my own parts, as I really like the Polyterra look and feel (plus cardboard spools). Will say the layer adhesion isn't quite as high as the PLA+ materials, but its a good quality material.

I'm going to try out some Overture next, given 3DPS offer that as well now 🙂

It is interesting to note that the price of recycled pla filament is much lower than the price of regular pla. It's about 12 dollars per kg, is worth trying. At the same time, you may not be able to guarantee 100% of your printing effect.

As somebody else who just started printing, I found it helpful to search reddit and the internet in general to find recommendations for cheaper-but-still-decent filament brands. Based on those posts, I'm most of the way through my first spool of Overture PLA in black (which I got on sale for an absolute steal of $15 USD but even at base price of ~$20 USD is reasonable), and I'm entirely happy with the print quality. Hatchbox is another affordable brand that seems to be well-regarded and was mentioned several times in this thread, as well.
