Anyone know what's changed with the STLs on the MINI for R7?

The MINI got some updates to its STLs a day after the MK3. While all other parts have a verbose description of why the part was changed, all it says for the four new parts is "R7 and MINI+" which isn't particularly helpful. I know the general advice is "If the MINI is working then don't take it apart" but I just wanted to know what has actually changed in these new revised parts?

As an addendum to the above, I've loaded the current files and the most recent obsolete revisions into a 3d modelling program, to compare the geometries. The following differences are apparent, though for the most part I can't see what they achieve (especially the widening of the Y axis rod separation and moving of the Y axis motor mount but not the Y axis idler mount - Surely the Y axis rods can't have been the wrong width apart since initial manufacture, and the belt path limits not lined up tangentially?)

Visible differences:

  • The Y belt holder (R7 vs R6) has a longer slot for the lower belt, and a thicker bracket around the hole on that side.
  • The Y plate front and Y plate rear (R7 vs R1) have both moved the leftmost Y axis rod further away from the rightmost Y axis rod by 0.53mm, along with the Y axis motor mount (though oddly, not the Y axis idler mount or the Y belt holder). This has extended the width of the plates by the same amount. The Y axis motor mount has a short circular peg sticking out of it now, and the idler mounting area has a new circular dimple in it along with a new 45 degree chamfer (presumably the chamfer is for strengthening and ease of printing). The holes to mount the plates to the aluminium frame are slightly larger.
  • The Z bottom (R7 vs R4) has a few sharp edges cut off (presumably to prevent unprintable overhangs), a moved M3S nut slot (presumably for ease of printing again), some thinner M3 screw holes, and a moved Y motor cable hole (which is the sole change in all of these which is obvious in the new MINI assembly manual, and avoids the cable running externally at all).

Link the two topics together 🙂

That's interesting. I didn't know you could click on the individual tags to get a description of all changes. Still, it would be nice if they added it to the description on the main STL page rather than bury it elsewhere 🙂

I'll print the bits off and change them over when I have to strip the printer down far enough for it to be of limited additional risk to future performance.
