USB drive corrupted (read-only/locked) after removing from Prusa MK4S

Hello,

I have a MK4S for a year now. The USB drive supplied with the printer caused corrupted G-code errors during printing so I replaced it with another USB drive (64GB Philips FM64FD180B). This went fine for around 10 prints. I always unplug the stick from the printer, add the g-code on my laptop (Ubuntu 24.04, slicer 2.9.4) and insert it back in the printer.

The printer is running firmware 6.2.6.

I removed the drive while the new filament was being inserted. There should be no access on the drive at this moment (I assume...). Now the drive is corrupted as it became read-only. It can also be caused by turning off my printer after the last print.

The drive does not have a read only slider. I tried formatting it, dd on the drive,... always the same message "read-only file system". So the device is defunct now.

  • Is there a safe way of removing the USB drive from the printer?
  • Is this a known issue with certain types of USB drives and are there USB drives that do not have these issues (corruption during read, corruption during (un)mounting?

Thanks in advance,
Koen
