Filament Sensor Calibration

Filament Sensor Calibration

Unable to complete the filament sensor calibration as it wont detect when i stick in filament, however I have been able to do prints no problem. Latest firmware installed. Any suggestions?

I’m having same problem-no filament detection.  I can load filament and get the machine to purge and unload, but it won’t detect.  This is after a 4s upgrade.

Has the filament sensor ever worked since the upgrade? Did the filament sensor pass calibration after the upgrade? What does the filament sensor status show in the status menu?

If the filament sensor was working and has now stopped, the problem may be debris in the filament sensor.  The MK4S filament sensor uses a magnetic "hall effect" sensor to sense the position of the small magnet that is a part of the spring/magnet/ball stack that is assembled into the top of the Nextruder heatsink.  If debris blocks the free return of the ball to the resting position (no filament inserted) then the printer will continue to sense filament present and will not properly detect runout, etc.  Sometimes this can be cleared by repeatedly inserting (not loading) a piece of filament into the top of the extruder to "bounce" the debris clear.  There is also a small hole in the top of the planetary gearbox where the tube from a can of compressed "air" can be inserted to attempt to blow the debris out (once again while repeatedly inserting and removing a piece of filament to move the sensor ball.  If these steps do not work it may be necessary to remove the planetary gear housing to enable removal and cleaning of the sensor ball/magnet/spring assembly manually.

If the sensor has never worked since upgrade it is possible that there is one too many magnets in the "stack".  Prusa supplies a spare magnet in the assembly kit for the 4S and if not careful it is possible to get both magnets between the ball and spring in the stack.  This would require disassembly as above to correct. 

The online assembly manual has detailed instructions for disassembly and reassembly/re-calibration of the planetary extruder and filament sensor.
