Cavity in MK4S "main-plate-r2"
What is this cavity used for? I see no reason to keep it.

That opening is to allow you to use "canned" air to clean out the filament sensor in the event that debris in the sensor prevents proper operation. It is not always successful but it is easier than disassembly of the extruder to manually clean the sensor.
