PrusaSlicer, Bridges and Bridging Angle

I can't find any documentation for the Bridging Angle setting in PrusaSlicer and I'm not 100% clear on the tooltip in the software:

"Bridging angle override. If left to zero, the bridging angle will be calculated automatically. Otherwise the provided angle will be used for all bridges. Use 180degrees for zero angle."

I have a part I'm trying to print that is essentially a long rectangle shape, and at each end there are 2 sections with bridges that run perpendicular to the long edges. With default settings, PrusaSlicer generates G-code that tries to print the bridges also perpendicular to the long sides, so they are the full width of the part. It would be much more sensible to print them parallel to the long sides, as they would then be much smaller bridges.

I've played around with the Bridging Angle somewhat blindly as there is apparently no documentation for the setting.

Default setting:

You can see the long bridges running top-left to bottom-right.

90 degree setting:

Looks like they are running at 90degrees from the X axis

180 degree setting:

With a bit of playing around, I've set them to 35degrees and it looks much better, but I'm surprised I had to meddle to improve this.

Am I incorrect to think PrusaSlicer should automatically calculate the best angle for each bridging area?

Here's the rest of the print elements for context:

No, you're not, and yes, it should—but it doesn't. It really seems to like those long bridges for some reason.

Think this is my first print where its impacted me. Can't get my head around what the slicer is doing with the bridges, as if I do manually override with a specified angle, it doesn't appear to apply to all bridges.

There is a difference between a bridge and bridge infill (even though they are both colour coded the same).  The bridging angle will set the angle for a proper bridge but it doesn't seem to effect bridges over infill.  That's probably why you are seeing a difference.

RE: PrusaSlicer, Bridges and Bridging Angle - Slicer Bug

Even though the thread is quite old, I stepped over it when struggling with the bridging angle. The mentioning of 35 degrees in the original post set me on track to solve my problem.

I figured out that the slicer seems to have a bug: the setting of 0 (zero) degrees has the same orientation as 90 degrees. You can see it if you set the bridging angle to 1 degree and it changes almost perpendicularly. So if I want to set bridging to zero degrees I type 180 in the form field.

That's no bug, it's a feature. 0/zero means the angle is calculated automatically, as per the tooltip.
