RE: Printing TPU on the MK4

I wasn't sure if the question was to me or not...  Sorry if it wasn't me.  From an MVS point of view, the Sainsmart seems to be better.  The Overture was cheaper, but is rated mvs=4.o, rather than 5.0 for the Sainsmart.  (So it takes longer to fail 🙁  )The Sainsmart GT-3 filament that was supposed to arrive today is delayed until tomorrow, thanks to Amazon.  The GT-3 is rated for higher print speeds, so maybe it's MVS is higher.

you said it got further when you loosened idler right.  can you do a another turn or two?

This is Overture TPU where I have modified the settings to Amazon Basic TPU.

Same TPU and Settings I am using. It is doing the first few layers well and jams when retracting to start a new part or the infill. I tried to lower the speed to 30m/s from 60, which failed again and am now trying to limit retraction length, reducing it from 2.5 to 1.5mm.

With no filament, the springs are loose.  I might be able to loosen one more turn.  Want to keep at least 3-4 threads in the plastic nut, else it will strip.  I might try the Sainsmart, this time, it will give me more MVS margin than the Overture.

in my test prints, I'm using 1.5mm retraction length and 10 ms/s for (de|re)traction.  too much/too fast retraction definitely can contribute to jams.

the 100% infill is really what is contributing to how long this takes.  if you didn't need 100% infill you could get the print time down.   I've been doing 3.5mvs   for sainsmart at 218

I was using 2.5mm for the Overture and 10mm/sec on the retraction and deretraction.

I'll go back to the Sainsmart and use your settings.  In the meantime, I will also see if I can redesign this model to a smaller size that doesn't stress this printer MVS as much.

The part needs strength in the walls and other areas.  Don't feel the part will hold up with lower infill.  I have done other parts with lower % infill, and they are ok, but I don't think this design would work without 100% infill.  But that is why I am looking into an altered design.

RE: Printing TPU on the MK4

you said your spool is marked as 220C as the top temp?  If so maybe do 220C instead of 218. Mine are definitely 215.   Though I'm testing with the pastel sainsmart, which is 92A and not 95A.  I do have some spools of the 95A stuff as well and I just looked, those non-pastel colors are 220C max.   so maybe you just need to up your temp by a couple deg

Fair enough.   you can get a lot of strength by paying with perimeters and the type of infill too though so it's worth considering and it would save you time and filament to print each one.

My Overture is marked 210-230C, I was printing at 218, which is sort of mid range, and 218C printed far better than at 230C which was a spiderweb and drooped terribly.

The Sainsmart TPU 95A is marked 200-220C.  The print at 218C wasn't bad, (not too furry) but it jammed (at much higher idler tension than I was using for the Overture).  So it might be worth a try to do the Sainsmart at this very low tension, and settings you have provided.  The tension now is the very lowest it has ever been set too.

I use the same tension for every material.  You shouldn't have to mess with it again once you've got it printing your tpu.   Tpu frustrates the crap out of me so I can definitely feel your pain.   wait until you get an xl and you throw multi extruders into the mix....

Ich konnte mein Problem lösen, indem ich MVS von 6 auf 4 reduziert habe. Retract ist 60, Deretract 20. Das scheint hier aber sonst nicht wirklich hilfreich zu sein. Sorry. Werde demnächst noch mal 5 probieren. Danke für den Hinweis auf MVS.

For those that are not German speakers, I provide a Google translated version of @phillip-8 's response.

I was able to solve my problem by reducing MVS from 6 to 4. Retract is 60, Deretract is 20. But otherwise that doesn't seem to be really helpful here. Sorry. I'll try 5 more soon. Thanks for pointing out MVS.

Oh gosh, I am so sorry. I don't know why I wrote that in German. Apologies and thanks for helping out. 😀

RE: Printing TPU on the MK4

I'd like to report that my last print actually completed!   Still too much stringing, but it completed all 901 layers.  Have no idea if my idea will work, looks like a lot of internal clean up is required.  I have a hot airgun that I might try at 150C.

Sainsmart TPU.  MVS=3.6, Retraction Speed = 10m/s, Dretraction Speed = 10m/s

9 tries.  Various filaments.  1/9.  Everyone is right, this stuff isn't easy to get right, especially if in the MVS region due to model size.  Learned a lesson - big prints are harder, a lot harder.  Will try a more modular approach in the future.

No problem with getting the PrintDry unit.  Ordered direct.  Thanks for all the assistance, it is greatly appreciated!

Glad to help.  In general stringing can be reduced by lowering the temp a degree or two.  you should be able to test that on a much smaller part though.

Sadly, I only had the instructions to work by.  Very loose settings seem to work for PETG and TPU so I will leave them loose per my TPU setting.  I'm a bit unhappy that this is "common knowledge" but was not conveyed in the assembly instructions (at least at the time of my assembly). I had looked at all the notes and don't recall seeing it there, but may have missed the note.  I shall go back to the instructions and post the adjustment myself.  This silly adjustment caused me a lot of grief, which only showed up on long prints.  Had to print the equivalent of 3.5 prints to get one ok one.  I was 1 success out of 9 tries.
