Is my nozzle too close?

Hi all.

Long story short: I'm concerned that my specific MK4 machine is self-calibrating itself to have the nozzle slightly too close to the print sheet (I think the correct lingo is "z offset is too low"?).

I've printed a small piece of PLA on my Smooth sheet, Satin sheet (twice), and my Textured sheet (all Prusa sheets). Could you take a look and give me your feedback?

The attached picture contains pictures of the underside of all prints, i.e. the underside of the first layer that's printed.

  • The Smooth print is not homogenous / even. I'm unsure if that's due to ghosting from the last print (Smooth is by far my least-printed sheet).
  • I had to have 2 attempts with the satin, where attempt 2 is far better than attempt 1 (I didn't change any settings between prints). Attempt 1 appears to have something wrong in the corner closest to the camera. Attempt 2 seems... perfect?
  • Textured seems perfect.

If more pictures is needed, feel free to just ask and I'll upload some more. I appreciate any help or insight that I can get!

It's in the workable range, you should get reasonable adhesion as long as the bed is clean...

I'm unsure if that's due to ghosting from the last print

The tendency reduces as the sheet ages but ghosting is the result of a combination of sub-micron effects.  Post processing can shift it but it's the reason satin sheets were invented for use where it mattered.

Attempt 1 appears to have something wrong in the corner closest to the camera.

You mean the fingerprint shaped reduced-adhesion shadow?  Most experienced users are obsessive about cleaning to avoid these wrecking larger prints.

Is your nozzle too close? No.  Could you 'improve' the cosmetic finish?  Perhaps, by micro adustments to the 'Z' offset at print time but post processing or painting would be as easy.

Cheerio,
