Bed adhesion problems PEI sheet with glue stick

It usually takes me alot to get to the point of needed to post about something especially something this simple and  pretty much chapter 1 in 3D printing

I have been struggling with Bed adhesion with prusament PLA onto the PEI sheet

So I'm using the new MK4  the bed has been cleaned perfectly with 99% isopropyl alcohol ✅

Brand new Prusament PLA so quality is not in question or filament moisture ✅

I'm using magigoo glue stick also Nicely applied to the bed ✅

And a default Prusament PLA setting from the slicer ✅

I have done this many times on the MK3s+ all the same set up and always had perfect bed adhesion no issues and even without Glue stick now in the past

So I'm a bit stuck in the wrong way ha the first layers look perfect but maybe i need a little more squish for a good bond ?

Any help would be awesome

Thanks

So it’s seems to be all resolved now from a bit of deeper research

What I thought was good enough cleaning and it has been in the past just wasn’t

A DEEP CLEAN  was needed

I went to town on all my sheets with HOT hot water and dish soap and a sponge washing each side of the sheet for like a minute or two then Drying them off with clean paper towels

Then cleaning off the sheets with my 99% isopropyl alcohol  and also opening a new micro fibre cleaning cloth to as my other one was a tad old

so everything was as clean as it could be and now all my test prints With the first layers are sticking perfectly it seems

✌️

Thanks for the replays and as usual it’s always something simple

You might try washing the plate with warm water and a few drops of dish washing detergent.  AFAIK, IPA is not a good solvent for PLA.

You should not need any adhesives to print PLA onto the smooth PEI sheet.  I would go as far to say that you shouldn't use adhesives for PLA at all.  You might want to check the nozzle to make sure it didn't drop or that it isn't loose. Just crack the thumb screws and make sure it's all the way up.  Also you should probably perform the self-test (wizard) all over again just to be sure.

RE:

First of all, disclaimer, I do not have the MK4.  I do not know the nuances of that machine at all.

If you are experienced in printing on the MK3* and get good results, you most likely have climbed up the learning curve and encountered the common stumbles on that trip.

You also should know when a build plate is clean, so there should be no need for the 'Clean your plate and clean it my way' admonitions.

I would try to isolate the cause of the difficulty, as in what's different between the whole universe between your MK3* and MK4.

Have you tried the same print with the same filament using the same build plate on both the MK3* and MK4?  This should eliminate all of the variables except for those having to do with the printer itself.  This is the first thing I would try if I had your situation.

If the print is good on the MK3* and poor on the MK4, I would then go over the set-up and calibration of the MK4 thoroughly.

I do know that Z calibration is critical for good first layer adhesion.  I know there are some reported issues with a blob of ooze on the nozzle of some MK4s that confuse the calibration via the load cell.  I have one non-Prusa printer which uses a load cell and I'm aware of these types of issues.

I do know for a fact that some prints with some PLA filaments on some PEI build plates do benefit from the use of an adhesion booster such as Layerneer or Magigoo.  If you are using Magigoo and still having adhesion issues, something is definitely wrong somewhere.  I would suspect a Z calibration issue if you are using Magigoo and are confident that the filament is indeed the proper type and dry.

RE: Bed adhesion problems PEI sheet with glue stick

My learning from Mk3 was. PLA sticks really well to the smooth sheet cleaned with IPA. In my early days I used glue stick as well, but now i just move my Z Offset (a lot) closer to the bed. Gluestick is required for PETG not to rip out chuncks out of the Smooth surface.

Satin sheet provides the same smooth bottom surface I like but is completely save with PETG.

Thanks for all these replays few things to try

so don’t have access to my MK3s+ so can’t do any back and forth comparisons  I should point out that small items maybe around 50mm by 50mm stick fine on the smooth PEI sheet without glue

a lot of my issues have been with bigger flatter parts that start to curl up on the corners even with glue stick applied

I have stain and powdered coated sheets and they have been even more problematic with just PLA no stickiness at all when again both being cleaned well and perfectly level on the bed ( nothings underneath them causing one side to be higher like bits of plastic ) the first layered are looking perfect as well

will keep working on why I’m struggling so much with a simple task as this and applying some of the things that have been mentioned

Thanks 😊

RE:

If you have large flat pieces made of PLA that curl up on the corners on the Prusa smooth PEI build plate, I might suspect some (possibly uneven, possibly intermittent) heat bed issues.

I have found on the MK3* that large-footprint PLA prints on the smooth plate are usually a first-time-every-time experience.  I will often times put a dab of Layerneer where the corners will hit, but again I often do not.

It's been larger ABS/ASA prints that have more issues warping and pulling up from the build plate, as they are known to shrink as the temperature decreases.

with large objects the effects due to shrinking are greater as well. Two things to try:

  • less solid layers ( less material shrinking at the same time)
  • enclosure  ( slower shrinking)

I hate it when people leave threads open ended, and always appreciate when a solution is posted at the end! Glad you solved your issue relatively easily!

Man, this is extra.  I've never had to do more than denatured alcohol on my sheets (except for back in the days when we used to use an ABS slurry).

RE: Bed adhesion problems PEI sheet with glue stick

Same!

I very rarely touch the bed - I only handle the sheet by the edges when bending to pop off a print, so the majority of it stays untouched.

If I haven't printed for a few days, I use a can of compressed air to blow off any dust that may have settled on the plate, rods, and extruder.

Every few prints I spray some IPA onto a paper towel and wipe the sheet down.

Never done anything else.....
