Where to see my i3 MK3 now that I am purchasing the MK4?

I am excited to purchase an MK4.  I spend way too much time leveling and first layer stuff with my wonderful i3 MK3S printer.  It has been such a wonderful tool.

But:  Where can I sell my MK3?  Will Prusa take it as a trade-in?  If I post it in Craigslist (or the like) what price should I ask?  What equipment is interchangeable?  Does the MK4 use the same nozzle, heat-break, heat exchanger, hot end, etc. ?

Thank you for any advice you can give.

No offence, but all that info is available in the videos and in the blog. Just use Google 🙂

Poor spelling!  I wondered where to SELL my MK3, not "SEE" my MK3.  Actually, I can see it in the lab!  LOL

:):):) don't sell, just upgrade to mk4 (or mk3.9), packages are available in the shop and details are in the blog 😍

I thought about upgrading, but it is about 1/2 the price of a new MK4 and i am running my MK3 almost constantly both for work (test apparatuses) and for fun art projects.  I told my wife I was thinking of selling "Jolene" (named because i spend so much time with "her", she is like the "other woman") she strongly recommended i keep both.  Perhaps the MK4 for work and Jolene for artworks (or visa-versa).  I think I will take her up on her advice!  I cleared a space for Jolene in the art studio.

It amazes me how much I print and how did I get along without one for so long!  I used to make my test apparatuses by hand that took days or weeks - now hours!  And the 3D printed art project simply did not exist before the printer.

I don't understand why people keep asking this question.  If you were a 3D printer manufacturer, would you take used equipment?  I wouldn't.  Too much liability and cost associated with it.  As far as selling it yourself goes (as it should be), a lot of people are swearing by selling their printer on etsy.

So... Addohm, I am a "people" with a question.  This is a forum.  So just answer the question (if you know the answer).  Lots of companies buy back outdated products - Apple and car dealers for two simple-minded examples.  It is not a stupid question.  In the case of Prusa, since the frame is the same between the 3 and 4, it seemed possible.   Perhaps you did not know the basic body is the same.

....and Prusa would have to get into the business of selling 'recycled parts'.

Did your Mk3 stop working?

Do you expect the Mk4 miraculously to make unmatchably better prints?

The output of the Mk3 is close to as good as FDM can get, yes there are micro improvements and the Mk4 will make some of them but the Mk3 has not become obsolete.

I spend way too much time leveling and first layer stuff

How long?  About ten minutes per nozzle change (not counting the change time itself) and ten minutes a quarter?

I anticipate there will be small print farms snapping up second user Mk3s as value for money workhorses. Yes, there will be a glitchy period as fashionable updaters temporarily flood the market but in a couple of months I expect the resale price to stabilise at no more than 10-20% less than the recent averages of around $600 for an unmodded machine in good condition.  Modded machines will probably drop in price a lot more.

Cheerio,

Not much is interchangeable:

However, we knew that we can push it “a little” further. We went through many iterations and since one thing often led to another, we eventually changed and improved more than 90% of the MK3S+ parts! The only things we kept the same are the Y-axis profiles, a couple of bearings, the heatbed and the power supply. Yes, even the frame is different. The cut aluminum frame we used so far is now replaced by a brand new die-cast aluminum frame (the translation previously stated “injection-molded” which is not correct). To be more specific: we’re using an aluminum-based alloy that is first injected into a two-part mold. After that, the raw cast frame is cleaned from technological runners and other casting scraps, sandblasted and powder coated.

The stepper motors are somewhat interchangeable, in that an MK3 user doing the MK3.9 upgrade uses the same steppers. You can use E3D V6 nozzles that you already have if you buy the nozzle adapter they sell.

Very few companies buy back used products. Apple is a good example with their phones. But car dealers sell cars, they do not make cars. Toyota dealers will usually buy your current car. Toyota will not.

The frame is not the same between the MK3 and MK4 (see above link). If you have an MK3 and upgrade to the MK4, you'll re-use your current frame, but the MK4 does use a different frame if you buy the MK4 instead of MK3 to MK4 upgrade kit.

If you're spending a lot of time doing Z calibrations on the MK3*, much of it is probably unnecessary.

Once you get it dialed in for a particular build plate, it's usually unnecessary to repeat it unless you change the nozzle or otherwise do maintenance on the hot end.

Thank you Jseyfert3!  That information is very useful.  I am excited to get my MK4 and have decided to keep my MK3 so I can print so much faster.  Right now I am printing another clock that takes 4 days to print all the parts - now it will be only 2! Also, one will mostly print stuff for work and the other for hobby.  My wife moaned "Oy! All the filament you'll go through!"  LOL  (But she is the one who suggested I keep both).

I’ve had an MK4 since a few days after announcements were made…. The frame is NOT the same…

With the money lost in shipping and import taxes, it’d never be worth it.

She’s a keeper! 🙂

My thoughts on the MK4’s is I wish I didn’t get it.  I’d have been better off with two discounted MK3S+ and not losing my place in line for the XL.  MK4 will get better I’m sure, but the people buying now are essentially “wide beta” Guinea pigs.
