RE: USB stick gets extremely hot
Yes, it's the laser engraved one that came with the MK4 kit.
I'm also using a USB extension (F to M USB type-A) as well because the USB stick connector is so tight.
Most of the time the USB stick is cool. I think there's some type of read/write loop that's overusing the USB and making it hot. The USB drive becomes unusable until I "unplug and plug it back in again". It's happened maybe 3-4 times in the last two months.
RE: USB stick gets extremely hot
Looks to me that is a dodgy connection on the USB extension as that is show a lot of heat, more than the actual usb. The first thing I would try is eliminating that, if you can fit the USB stick in without it, even if it is a bit of a pain, you can see if the problem goes away, if it doesn't try a different USB stick
RE: USB stick gets extremely hot
It's happened without using the extender as well.
RE: USB stick gets extremely hot
Then it is probably a dodgy connection in the usb stick, you are not going to get that sort of temperature from just i/o and even if you could a lot of people would be complaining about it, if it were a software problem
RE: USB stick gets extremely hot
Unfortunately since the firmware is effectively locked (requires a voiding warranty to upload your own) I don't have a good way to debug whether the OS is causing the disconnect and overheating.
I could put in a similar USB stick made of metal and see if it gets hot once in a while and disconnects from the controller. Prusa Research could test whether the USB sticks they give out are somewhat faulty, or if the OS is bugging out. My guess is that's it's the OS because the USB stick isn't being written/read at a high rate.
RE:
Fair enough, you've got a trivial test to see if it is a faulty stick or software related but if you don't want to do it that's your choice.
RE: USB stick gets extremely hot
Ive seen alot of people complain that the originail usb sticks can get hot and randomly stop working. Thay is why i asked if it was the prusa one. Just replace it and you will be fine.
