Thermal Runaway on some prints

The first time it happened I was printing a Temp Tower for a new filament and I had downloaded it as a .3mf for a XL.  I thought I did ok on transferring some of the settings and discarding others that seemed XL specific.  Got a Thermal Runaway error printing that, got worried, tried to print something else and all was well.  So I figured I just screwed something up trying to save some things from the XL settings and discard others.  

The second time I was printing a rugged box and I can't really remember the settings I had, but it would get about 3 layers in and throw the Thermal Runaway error.  I got pretty concerned initially, but then on the second time it happened I was playing with pausing the print and changing temps on the fly.  Wasn't able to save it.  Then I looked at my first failure and I don't believe the Thermal Runaway was actually happening.  What I'm basing that statement on is I was printing in PLA with the old Prusa Silver filament I got with my MK2S back in 2017 (long story, but that filament was fine and prints well on my MK2S and my MK4), and as evident by printing temp towers, the filament looks different at different temperatures.  I did not see any evidence of the nozzle getting hotter leading up to the red screen and beeps.

Fastforward to last night and I've been dissapointed with the print quality (stringing) on a lot of my prints, so I printed the Cute Fox 1 because I had printed that on my MK2S this summer and it came out fantastic.  I still had the filament I had used before, so I printed with the exact same settings and got the Thermal Runaway error again a few layers in. 

My thoughts are if I raise the temp for PLA I can cause the error.  I don't know this for sure, but I can try again and confirm.  This was a Creality CR Series Rainbow PLA and it seems to like to print at 230-235.  

I'd welcome any thoughts.

Update:  Everything was going well with the Overture PLA profile I have, printed 8.6mm or so (caliper measured) and I thought there was enough print to go that I could kick the nozzle temp up to the 235 I printed on my 2S for a fair comparison.  Within a few seconds of doing that I got a Preheat Error.

Update 2:  Played around last night with printing a simple part I designed in SketchUp.  I printed it in PETG at 250, PLA at 220, 235, and 220 changing the temp on the fly to 235.  All printed fine except for the stringing.  Decided to slice Cute Fox 1 again on my Mac since I don't ever remember a print failing this way that I sliced on my Mac.  I recreated the higher temp settings for PLA and scaled it up to 250% again (all attempts at 250% and 10% cubic infill, 2 perimeters).  About 20% in I decided to play with temps by dropping and then rising again 5 degrees, no issue (although ramping up to 235 seemed to take a while and made some backwards steps as I watched).  Then at about 40% I realized I forgot to enable supports, stopped the print.  Now almost out of filament, I choose Snug supports and start the print.  It gets 4 layers in and throws a Thermal Runaway error.  

Supports triggered this one on this print it seems.  But when I was getting Thermal Runaway on a rugged box I did not have supports.

Hi, I have similar issue, but it seems to me that it's caused by slicer settings and gcode. 

Try to reslice it with some general PLA material

Could be I am blind, but I did not find whether the error concerned the nozzle or the bed. Both can happen, but the nozzle thermal runaway is rarer. The error message contains the information which part is concerned.

I had a thermal runaway issue that occurred because of a bad nozzle heater. I didn't have problems with PLA but when I printed something higher temperature like PCTG, it couldn't maintain the proper temperature and when it fell 10 degrees, I got the thermal runaway. So it's not necessarily running to hot. It could be running too cold.

Watch the temperature as the model prints. Does it vary more than a single degree? It shouldn't.

Fully agree. It is leaving the requested temperature for time longer than the set threshold regardless the direction.

Tonight I was able to save it.  I knew to expect since I printed with the default settings for Overture PLA with the IS profile, .2mm speed.  I was printing 2 small drawers, the big flat areas are where this happens the most.  I watched it drop temp (getting to 210 and 209 before I paused) and as in the past I tried to pause and let it recover.  It did recover temp while paused and when I resumed it began to slowly drop again.  I did that twice and then decided to drop the temp from 220 to 200.  Resumed and all was good after that.

Left out some key info and it was too late to edit. This was the first time I believed the thermal runaway was real. All my other filaments looked the same up to the error. But this AnyCubic Grey PLA was noticeable.
