Nextruder Clicking noise

Hey guys,

I have been running a pre-assembled Mk4 for about 2 weeks now and I have the issue, that during retraction a strange sort of "clicking" noise is coming from the Nextruder. It feels like some sort of excessive backlash or something that came loose inside.

Does anyone else experience this?

Yes I am hearing the same noise. Mostly on tiny fast movements. It hasn't seemed to affect any prints yet.

Yes, I can confirm that! That was with my MK4 from the beginning. I have tried the usual things : nozzle temperature increased , speed decreased , contact pressure increased . This has brought no success.

Yes, me too. Mk4 factory built. Started after a filament breakage (Galaxy Black) resulting in a nozzle clog. I've searched for debris in the nextruder gears but can find no culprit. As soon as I can work up the courage I'll disasemble the gears and have a proper look. Additional issue, mine is in an original Prusa enclosure which makes access to the machine a bit fiddly!

Yes me too. Support says it is normal but i think it is no normal.

But I am glad Iam not alone with this issue.

I have noticed that it only ever occurs with certain retracts and often when the printer is printing faster. Even without IS.

Support does not say that it is normal. But the support also does not know where this comes from.

In general, I am not really satisfied with the Mk4. Z-axis vibrates strongly, loud vibration when printing. In general, the printer is loud.

I wonder what the XL community has to say about this, because they should be mostly the same printhead, right?

No its not the same. The Nextruder for the Mk4 is a modified version from the XL

Pretty sure this is firmware related. I installed 5 alpha3 today and most of the vibration disappeared, although for the first time I had a nozzle cleaning error! Go figure. The encouraging thing about this is that the printer will eventually get ironed out, as brains far greater than mine work on the issues. Patience, as they say, is a virtue. 😉

RE:

No it is not firmware releated. I had this issue with alpha 2,3 and 4 and also with 4.7.1. For me, it helped to clean the gears with ISP and re-grease them. And above all, do not tighten the cover too much, otherwise the plastic ring of the cover will rub against the gears. After that, the click was gone.

has anyone besides Cloud1983 solved this problem? mine clicks just as you all say. it seems to happen in moves where it is doing a lot of extruding and retracting.

RE: Nextruder Clicking noise

Check how tight the cover is on yours. Otherwise recalibrate the gears under "Control => Gears Calibration".When you tighten the 3 or 4 screws, make sure you tighten them only slightly, not too tight. Before that, I would carefully remove the cover completely and look at the inside. For me, the grease inside was completely black. I suspect that comes from the above-mentioned plastic ring that is in the lid, because this grinds.Until now, I could not determine da click with me more. However, I have the model where it had struck me the most (Lillith Head) since then no longer printed, but other things with IS and so far I could no longer determine clicking. Unfortunately, the support has not yet been able to tell me the cause of the problem.

I have this too. I did recalibrate the gears and no change. I just assumed it was normal, or at least I hoped it was. Only happens on retractions.  I haven't upgraded the firmware yet, was waiting until it was more stable since I have other (ahem) printers when I need input shaping. 🙂

RE: Nextruder Clicking noise

Have you tried adjusting the idler screws?

I had infrequent clicking when I first assembled my MK4, but none since I experimented with the idler screws when trying to print TPU. The adjustment was slight - just a little bit looser or tighter, equally on both screws.

The clicking I had sounded exactly like the clicking the MK3 makes when the idler screw is too loose or too tight. It happens when the gear is turning but the filament isn't moving.

I'm pretty sure your click is different than what we're talking about here.

RE:

Anyone solve their extruder click? I captured a video (apologies that you hear another printer in the background but the click is obvious) today and wondering if this is what folks hear, too.

My printer developed this after about 11 days of printing and no hardware changes or adjustments. It happens on any filament I try including Prusa and seems to be related to restarts.

What I've tried so far: adjusting tension on the idler (both ways), checking all other fasteners related to the extruder, re-running extruder gear calibration, and adjusting the gear cover fasteners, and cold pulls. I don't seem to have a nozzle blockage and there is no visible effect on print quality.

RE: Nextruder Clicking noise

I have the same cracking/clicking but not so high frequents... and only when I print ASA(!?).  - 1 or 3 clicks per minute!?

RE:

So with me the clicking also comes back after some time. But it seems to be less pronounced. I then always clean the gears inside the gearbox with isopropanol and grease them leichtz new and then it is better or gone. But where it comes from exactly, I do not know.

RE: Nextruder Clicking noise

In my case, the clicking noise keeps coming back after a while. It helps to clean the gearbox, but I would really like to find out the cause of the problem. Is it the motor because after a certain time too much abrasion from the filament accumulates in the gearbox and the motor then has to apply too much force and oversprints?
