MK4 Unable to update firmware.

I am unable to update the firmware. The MK4 can see all of the USB sticks I have tried and either goes straight to the menu and highlights the ‘print’ icon or it starts to read the USB and gets stuck in a boot loop.

I have tried four different USB sticks (two old, two new), both NTFS and FAT32, different USB ports on my PC and downloaded the latest firmware a couple of times.

I have also tried updating incrementally but no joy.

Current firmware is 4.6.4

I would appreciate any help.

RE: MK4 Unable to update firmware.

I haven't seen any issue. Make sure the stick is FAT32 formatted and the .bbf file is in the drive's root directory.

i would recommend formatting exFAT and not FAT as the FAT is older and has a 4GB file size limit

Hi I know what it says on the prusa support page but they are wong FAT is a very old legacy formatting version and has been superseeded by exFAT, it's the same as FAT but much better. I should know as I tech Computer Forensics and have a degree in computers and a CISSP. I have posted to the Prusa support telling them to change this. We are now using 32bit boards .

Format what you want but I have stated my case.

Well, I would assume that Prusa knows which file systems their firmware actually supports. And while exFAT surely is the newest and most capable file system, in the FAT series, it also is _not_ compatible with FAT32, and notable quite a bit more complex.

I don't think we need to argue merits of file systems here. I just think to help the OP troubleshoot his or her issue it's safest to not introduce extra variables and stick with the recommended approach even though exFAT may arguably work just as well.

Did you try exFAT on a MK4 before telling Prusa to change their documentation? Because I did, and it doesn't work.

To format the stick in exfat does not solve the problem and is not a good advice.

On my Prusa printer with a 32bits board, the contents of an exfat formatted stick do not become visible on the display.

Thus, unusable. FAT32 is the way to go.

By the way, I have to see the first G-code file larger than 4Gb yet.

So a maximum file size of 4Gb on a fat32 formatted stick is not a problem either.

Thank you to everyone who replied.

Finally, it worked, after about 14-15th try.

The last of my old USB drives worked, Corsair brand.

Sandisks and Kingstons wouldn’t.

exFAT wouldn’t work, had to be FAT32. And to keep things simple I used a 32gb stick, windows 11 doesn’t offer FAT32 on anything larger by default.

Once again, thank you all.
