MK4 can't make manual color change. why?

I'm running MK4 with firmware 5 (latest), and PrusaSlicer 2.6.1 for M1 Mac.

I'm printing two layers, one clear, one opaque with text clear. Bottom clear layer ties islands in characters like "e" so they don't come loose.

I do not yet have the material selector, so I want to do a manual filament switch at the start of the second layer.

I should be able to add a manual color change using the layer ruler on the right side of window, but cannot. Right button, or control with left button, don't have any effect. Clicking the + at the top fattens the ruler line, and moving mouse along the line does change the object display color as I move from one layer region to the other.

However, I cannot find anyway to insert a color change.

The print works OK but without stopping for a manual filament change.

The layers were exported separately as STL files in Fusion 360, but weren't recognized as two objects in PrusaSlicer. I had to manually position them.

Would that cause the color change option to not be available? They do show in preview as separate objects, with different colors.

The two layers occupied the same space. That caused the problem.

In Fusion, make sure you use the text object(s) to subtract out the occupied space in the surrounding object by using the Modify→Combine→Cut function. I usually then right-click on the top component, Save as Mesh, 3MF format, one file. By saving it as one file, the spatial relationship of the objects is preserved.
