Firmware file required?

Are we now required to keep the bbq file on the thumb drive?

My MK4 is refusing to power on with "missing firmware file" if it's not there, even though flashed to 5.1.0

This looks like it might be a known 5.1.0 firmware bug, based on this in the 5.1.2 release notes

Error 13604 fixed

A bug found in the firmware release 5.1.0 affects MINI, MK4/MK3.9, and XL printers. If a USB drive is connected during startup, the printer may keep asking for a firmware file (.bbf) and display error message #13604. This issue has been identified and fixed in the current release.

RE: Firmware file required?

I've already loaded FW 5.1.2+13478 and I still get the 13604 error on power up.  Not fixed in the latest FW

RE:

Same here…error still shows. And, it isn’t 5.1.0 bug, but earlier FW one… reset to factory defaults doesn’t help.

i also get quite some “crashes” and x recalibrations at print startup (this is happening for a while , i guess from 5.0 fw). When it’s printing crash never happens, but only at start of print…

RE: Firmware file required?

I get no print problems, my printer is working perfectly. My printer is new and came with 5.0 FW, then I upgraded. Its obviously a problem in the bootloader where it goes to look for the firmware file, maybe the flash drive isn't fully initialized. I've let Prusa know about it. Wait for an update.

I'm still getting it here too; only now it's error 13614. At least I can click and continue to boot.

RE: Firmware file required?

Nope. I installed last rc1 fw and it’s still there…

Do you have several different .bbf files in the root of your USB drive? You could try having just the most recent one there.

Have you tried booting the printer without the USB drive inserted? Same error message then?

RE: Firmware file required?

When I turn the Mk4 printer on with the USB drive (that came with the printer and has only the 1 version of the .bbf (latest) on it) already inserted, the error message occurs.  When I turn the printer on and there is no USB drive inserted I don't get the message.  When I insert the USB drive after the printer is on I also don't get the message. I often forget to remove the usb stick when I turn the printer on so encounter the error message regularly.

On a side note, after I received the printer and set it up with the Prusa usb stick that was included with the printer, I decided to remove all the files that I didn't think I needed such as preinstalled model files and I accidentally deleted the .bbf file.  When I went to use the usb stick after it was deleted, I first encountered the error.  I went online and re-downloaded the file to the usb stick but the error still occurs.

RE: Firmware file required?

Seems to be dependent on the firmware file found on the USB drive. Are you sure the version on the drive is the same version as the one installed on the printer? On the github release there are several files next to each other with very similar names for the different printer types.

Perhaps the firmware install was not complete. The install consists of two stages, the firmware and the bootloader. Perhaps the bootloader was not installed correctly. Look at this post describing a "revert procedure" that works a bit different from the normal update: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/658235/

RE: Firmware file required?

USB contents doesn't matter - at least in my case. This error doesn't pop up each time, but occasionally (pretty often, though). Then i just click and it boots normally.

Honestly, i didn't try without USB, but i did try with formatted one and error still pops up, and in this case USB was empty, no bbf, no g-code present.

I doubt that bootloder (or anything else) would not install completely, since this error is present for quite a few firmwares now, and bootloader was also updated in this time.
