Broken filament recovery

I've been printing with TTY3D Gold Silk PLA. At first it was OK, if a little bit boogery. But, as I've gotten toward the end of the reel the quality of the filament has really dropped off and I'm getting clogs and breaks like the one shown, often with even less filament protruding. I find it difficult or even impossible to grab that little nubbin while the hot-end is installed.

What I've taken to doing is removing the hot-end, which gets me a few crucial extra mm of exposed filament with which to grab on, and then heating the hot-end with a hot air gun until I can pull out the filament.

Is there a better way?

RE: Broken filament recovery

Yes - I had this yesterday with an old spool of PETG. I tried to get the part out of the extruder using a pair of pliers. But I found out that it is easier to heat the extruder. Put in the new filament through the inlet and push the new filament with pliers into the extruder pushing the broken filament in front. Give it a try - you dont have to remove anything - only open the lever at the gear transporting the filament (don't know the exact name)

Best regards, Clemens
