RE: MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

I had a very early printer and had issues with the screen going blank and a very loud x-axis motor, especially on the first layer. Since receiving my replacement printer everything has worked great and no issues so far (hope that doesn't jinx me!).

RE:

It would be fine if it were true - the fact is that it's not.

Even the issues I had with my MK4 don't even correlate with the claims made about "design flaws", especially when a replacement motor fixed the noise issues.

I just wish people were more sceptical of these charlatans.

Just quoting this to show how FUD and BS can easily spread around. Nothing this guy said was correct, especially now I have experience using a MK4.

As some already noticed we changed the MK4 gearbox cover. It is manufacturing optimization and gives us a higher yield in production - we can make more printers. This is part of every printer lifecycle and MK3 had hundreds of production tweaks over time. This and some other little things slowed us down a bit, and we are now roughly 2 weeks behind the original estimated dates. We are now picking up speed 🏎️

We register a few user reports with MK4 not being as quiet as it should be. We are investigating, and it looks like one limited batch of motors with different specs is the probable culprit. I will follow up in the article 🔇

From: https://www.reddit.com/r/prusa3d/comments/13jjk9c/quick_update/

So, BS on the 50% failure rate claim and BS on the nextruder or any other "design flaw". Simple manufacturing QOL updates (expected over any manufactured product), and a small amount of QC issue / 3rd party vendor management.

Something something mountains and mole hills...

Unfortunately that's just PR speak.  It's easy to call any change an enhancement for efficiency but there was/is more to it than that.  Regardless of if they want to say - we messed up and didn't recognize an issue pre-production or not is fully up to them at this point.  I couldn't care less what people think.

Unfortunately, the negative noisy ones tend to get the most attention.

I can't see the stats without voting and I haven't received my kit yet. So someone would be kind enough to report how the matter is going.

Sorry for my poor English. I try to do my best.

It's clear that you have been actively involved in a collaborative process with Prusa's team to address the issues with the Nextruder and carriage, and it seems like the changes and adjustments you have been discussing go beyond just the absence of a single screw. I understand that this process has been ongoing and involved a considerable amount of effort and communication.

If you have any specific questions or need assistance with any aspect of this process, please feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to provide helpful information.

I've got the rattling/buzzing noise issue on the Z-axis.

I've been banging my head against it and I think in my case I /may/ have found the issue:  the power supply is rattling.  Even though it's tight against the frame there's something inside which is making a buzzing noise.  I removed it and rewired it so it could lay flat on the table on a washcloth.  When I move the z-axis (or auto home) the rattling coming from the right side is pretty much gone.  The buddy board box resonates a little as well, but the bulk of the noise seems to be on the power supply side.  I'm still experimenting.

I think Ill give this a try too. May crack it open and see if theres' something sitting up against the side of the case. Also I've noticed that the z-axis rattles when I use the shortcut interface ( long hold on button ) than if I use the Control->Move Axis->Move Z menu route. It usually only rattles when I attempt relatively large movements ( 30mm or so ) . Its as if the former is executing multiple move-small-step-then-stop motions resulting in a hammer like effect. For live-z I think this makes sense but for other activities its a bit distracting.

I had problems with the xLCD which went black during the first print. At the moment this problem disappeared for my last two prints.

RE:

Poor experience compared with previous Prusa printer kits. I had a GT2-16 pulley that would not fit on the Y Motor, hole too small / shaft too big. Confirmed with digital caliper. Solved by reaming out the pulley with a twist drill bit enough to allow the pulley to be tapped on the the shaft. Seems I am not the only user to have this problem as someone on Reddit reports the same - they contacted support and got a new motor and pulley shipped out.

Also got horrendously noisy Z travel after finishing assembly, so loud I would not have been able to use the printer if anyone in the house was asleep. Two test prints failed to complete. Self diagnosis proved the right Z Motor to be the culprit. It took four different support chats over several days, a wait of several days for the Prusa Quality Control dept. to respond, sending of many images and four separate videos to achieve a replacement right Z motor. This should reach me in two days time apparently by DHL, that is twelve days since the kit was delivered and nine days since the issue was first reported to support.

No idea if the printer will function correctly once the new motor is fitted, as so far it has not achieved even its first test print. Disappointing after previous good kit experiences with Mk2, Mk3, update kits, SL1, MMU2 etc.

Issues noted on the assembly instructions.

Any changes/fixes to the noice?

The support continued to tell me to make more videos, and I frankly did not have the time to continue making even more videos. Apart from that, one more vid will not fix the issue.

Also was away so I havent heard the latest about the issue. Just tried the newest f/w but there was no change in noice levels.

RE: MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

The Z noises on my printer have gotten progressively worse with each day. At first readjusting the Z tops or trapezoid nuts could slightly reduce the noise or make it jump sides, but nothing helps anymore. My trapezoid nuts have different tolerances each, one is tighter on the rod and slides into the plastic easily, one is very loose on the rod and has to be pushed into the plastic with reasonable force, one is in the middle of the scale. Removing the X motor used to remove the Z noise completely, not really the case anymore. Movement down is way worse than moving the axis up, but both are noisy. The sounds are like drilling, like something is binding, it can be heard through concrete walls, my neighbour started asking me why I'm drilling every day. It's obscenely loud, way louder than my MK3, even louder than Bambu printers. This is not an acceptable level of noise, it doesn't sound like typical resonating printer axis, this sounds like something is wrong, like something is binding, like a broken motor. But the noise seems to come from the plastic ends of the X axis, not the motors at the bottom, so I have no idea what to think of it. It sounds like trying to drill into concrete without an impact drill, it's extremely bad and really sounds like something is broken somewhere.

I'm also disappointed with this, especially when the printer is advertised as exceptionally quiet. Sure, there are small rattles and droning when printing, but these are quieter than my MK3 and are still what I'd consider a very quiet machine. But the Z axis is atrocious. Something is clearly wrong with my machine if a competitor known as being obscenely loud is more quiet than a printer actually advertised as quiet. My MK3S+ never experienced anything close to this noise.

I've had a few chats with support, some solutions were helping immensely but only for a few days and the issues came back tenfold. Other convos were basically "we'll try to help but this is normal since it's not during actual printing", which I do not accept as an answer. The advertisements were not "low noise only when printing", it was "low noise period". We've currently started an email chain about this issue, we'll see what comes of it. I do not accept the current situation as being "normal".

I don't want to just spam complaints everywhere, but I am really feeling bad about this purchase currently. I really liked my MK3S+, I have an enclosure and MMU3 on order, I love the print quality coming from my MK4, the build experience, the sound during actual printing is overall very good, I like Prusa's products a lot. But this Z axis issue is unacceptable and I hope we will find some resolution because I want to keep this printer and I want to use it for years to come. I really want this solved somehow.

I had to partially strip the printer to test the Z motors on their own detached from the X carriage and supply two videos to them before they would believe that my printer actually had a faulty motor. Then I had to constantly chase support after the issue was handed off to the quality control dept.

Well, unfortunately, this is apparently nothing new with the support. They squirm and squirm when it comes to the fact that something is defective and apparently try to sell the buyer as stupid. My Mk4 is also loud on the Z axis and also loud when printing (vibrations) but there more with 0.6 nozzle. I was also told that the vibration on Z would be normal. uhhhm no, it is not Prusa.

Let me show you the noise on mine then. The vibrating KRRRRR noise started yesterday evening and prompted me to reprint parts related to the Z axis. I've replaced the parts - Z motor mounts, Z tops, X axis motor side, X axis idler side, Z axis bearing caps. Result? No difference. The KRRRR sound is the worst of them all. I've tried switching around trapezoid nuts to no luck. It sounds like bad bearings or bad motor or both.

Please note that I do not have a professional mic, so the sound appears a lot quieter on the video than in real life. Irl it's extremely loud.

The z noise doesn't bother me as you can't hear it during a print - I think it's the motors though, and that they're the same motors used in the mk3 (my mk3s+ had the same z noise issue).

Thank you very much for this! This is very important information - a lot of people have their printers way more quiet with no noise like that. This further proves that the noise on my machine is NOT normal and, therefore, is fixable and should be fixed via warranty. I hope the support will acknowledge this.

I've sent them a few more videos today and will await their response on Monday.

I had the same sound with my mini+.

I solved it by loosening the two bolts securing the trapezoid nut.

I had tightened them too much.

You could also try this.
