RE: MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

I think this is the reason why some printers made such loud noises during the first layer. Perhaps something was pressed on too thickly or had become tense as a result.

Good catch. I wonder if it's an assembly issue... behind the plastic cover is a metal frame holding the gears, and they found it was easier to assemble if they could put one screw into that frame before putting the plastic cover on. Maybe the frame was slipping out or falling away during assembly.

No idea if they was a design flaw or they just wanted to save a screw

while waiting for the mk4 kit's to dispatch i have been watching most of the unboxings and on the last couple i have watched i have noticed that there is now only 3 screws in the nextruder front cover compared to 4 in the first unboxings i watched

the bottom left of the cover no longer a screw and there is no hole either so its not just missing

noticed this on Chris Riley's unboxing and Uncle Jessy's second unboxing where his first unboxing had all 4 screws

Reading this thread is like every time prusa releases a new printer -  I am with Prusa since 2017 - owning an i3 MK2S (now in 2.5S) and a MINI, having built my own 3D printer with my own configuration of marlin and now waiting vor a MK4 kit.

Every time a new printer came up, there were lots of posts of how bad the new printer model was and so on. But my simple question is - if they are not able to built good printers which last for long time - why is there such a big community using them?

You can't explain that when they only sell shit ...

If they have issues, they normaly work hard on solving them resulting in releases of new parts, firmware updates and so on.

In my opinion, 3D printers still require a lot of experience and knowledge to successfully produce parts. We are still a long way from switch on - print - done!

Best regards, Clemens

That is already clear what you write. The problems that e.g. my printer made, had however not to do with adjusting or similar. It was just something else, something that didn't work properly. A faulty part or something was mounted wrong, maybe too tight. I don't know. However, I hope that my replacement printer will no longer have this problem.

Good spot!

Problem is, now I’m watching YouTube videos and looking out to see if they have the ‘old’ version with 4 screws, or the ‘new’ version with 3 screws on the extruder!!

Another example, where it is clearly seen that the fourth screw does not exist: video

Sorry for my poor English. I try to do my best.

Don’t care about fewer screws as long as the issue is fixed!!

Had it a week.  Running pretty constantly. Much quieter than my MK3S and love the first layer self-leveling.  At this point, I am just waiting for PrusaConnect to catch up to OctoPrint.

For those that were following the updates from the first delivery of MK4, design flaw recognition, and ultimate toolhead changes, I put in a final post on the Reddit thread...

Final Update:

Had a wrap up call with our account manager and the support team today now that we have 2 replacement MK4s we've put through the paces. Everything is looking good on the changes to the toolhead assembly.

Notably, the R1 design will be forever known as the "4 screw" design and the R2 design will forever be known as the "3 screw" design. With the necessary changes to the Nextruder assembly, the only visual reference between the two versions is the number of screws and the mount.

Are you going to tell us what the design flaw is or just vaguely refer to what @knc discovered a few days ago?  You are really bad at this internet thing.

You're really bad at that being a person thing.  Some people try to help, people call them names and doubt them, things are proven, and still the refusal to be nice.

Just glad that after a whole lot of collective effort by people, you'll get a better machine than you would have otherwise.

I don't believe I ever called you any names.  I've just been asking for you to post some kind of proof with your claims.  Even this latest one, you've given nothing of substance.  You just repeated what someone else had already discovered by watching review videos and passed it off as some kind of insider knowledge with your 'account manager and the support team'

Whatever, get over yourself.  I said I didn't have a pic of the R1 design dissected (didn't expect a random question 3 weeks later) so don't have a before/after.  Clearly everything in my posts/updates has been correct and I'll leave it at that.  I'm done with you.

RE: MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

Jeremy... your post is good in noting the design change that was seen before, but it still lacks in why that was changed. I don't have an MK4 in my hands, but I'd have to think that one screw did not change the way it worked. It didn't change balance, it probably didn't grind on something (or they could have used a shorter one), it didn't adversely interact with anything that I can tell. Id still place my bets on it being an assembly thing.

Also, people who are right and have evidence don't have to resort to the tactics you are using. They just let the evidence speak for themselves. You're being defensive and using pretty typically false arguments (straw man and others) to make your point.

Yes, the one screw changed between the two versions. This correlation does not point to your causation... again. I'd like to see someone open the cover and see if the 4th screw is hidden in there... which would point to an assembly change, and not functional change. Prusa update their designs constantly, that's just normal and part of the beauty of their production model.

RE: MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

I said that the screw is the visible byproduct of the changes, not that it was the totality - I was very clear it was a combination of things all along - every post.  The tolerances and assembly of the Nextruder combined to make resonance throughout the toolhead, not a single screw or tension.  That was explained in great detail in the initial troubleshooting posts on Reddit.

I don't pretend to work for Prusa or have access to their STEP files.  And I'm not totally deconstructing our new R2's Nextruder's and carriage to find exactly what changed in every component - just to satisfy a few.

Over the past 10 days we've completed the field evaluation they requested on the R2 design.  This was in tandem with our account manager and the same team we've worked with for nearly a month now.

I have always stated that I was working with their team to first identify the issues, then work with them on various tweaks and adjustments, and then to receive and test in the field 2 replacements.

So you've been working with a team at Prusa on an issue for almost a month.  You worked with them to identify the issue and then you worked with them on various tweaks and adjustments.  From there, you did a 10 day field evaluation at Prusa's request to evaluate the fix.  After all that, the best you have for an explanation of the changes is that a screw is now missing from the extruder.... a fact that is already known to everyone here.  Could have saved us all some time and just not posted anything at all.

For what it's worth, I have the 3 screw nextruder design.
