RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
It's not. You get those 10mm because the extruder is smaller in the back. So, you get some way before the collision.
But then again…why does the mk4 full upgrade state that the print height is 10mm more then either the original mk3(s(+)), the 3.5 or 3.9…so I recon the frame is upgraded with the mk4 upgrade…but we’ll see
Then…why don’t you get that 10 mm on the 3.9?? Has the same extruder…
RE:
Can you please do your research first?
The MK3.5 has the old extruder.
The MK3.9 has the new one.
The difference between the MK3.9 and the MK4 upgrade kits is just the stepper motors.
MK3.5 upgrade | MK3.9 upgrade | MK4 upgrade | |
Build volume |
250 x 210 x 210 mm | 9.84 x 8.3 x 8.3 in | 250 x 210 x 220 mm | 9.84 x 8.3 x 8.6 in | 250 x 210 x 220 mm | 9.84 x 8.3 x 8.6 in |

The upgrade comparison table at https://www.prusa3d.com/product/original-prusa-i3-mk3-s-to-mk3-9-upgrade-kit#description shows the same build volume for 3.9 and 4.

Father confusing the mk4 upgrade page shows different measurements

RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
"improvements" to the supply chain do not just help the manufacturer. They also provide more products for the consumer.
Yeah that's what I was saying further up the thread. There can be improvements to the consumer (speed, quality, reliability) and or improvements to the manufacturer (supply chain availability, cheaper cost, reliability). It would be pretty misleading to tell the consumer there are 'improvements' if it only benefits the manufacturer. In there video they compared print speed between the MK3 and the MK4 but noted the MK4 speed listed was in draft mode. This is really not an accurate comparison.

That is likely a typo based on what I have read and watched in the videos.

If for some very unlikely reason you should break the old frame, you'll buy the new one as a spare part.
Aside from that, I wonder if someone is thinking how to reuse the 8 bit board and the old stepper motors after the mk3 to mk4 upgrade. Something like a "Prusa plotter" for example would be a great addition...
RE:

But the 3.9 kit has the new extruder but doesn't have the extra 10mm listed. Which suggests to me that it is more due to some other difference in the axes.
RE:
Check again - it is listed on all 3.
I think that is a typo but is in the chart. On the Prusa Live, I am pretty sure they said it was specifically said it was due to the smaller extruder size.

RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
Probably more cost efficient to spend the extra $400 and get the new MK4 and then wind up with two printers.
I would really like to see an accurate apples to apples comparison of print speed.
RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
True, but I'd always wonder how those 1.8% of prints would have looked. haha! I'm most likely going to upgrade my two MK3S+ that I purchased recently with the MK4 and then try to sell my old ones. I was thinking I could list on Ebay, but shipping an assembled printer seems like it would be a pain. I need to check if the assembled printer will fit in the original kit box. I don't think it will offhand, but maybe I'm wrong.
...
I predict it makes no discernible improvement over stock for 98.2% of prints.
Also looking to see my recently purchased MK3S+ and get the MK4.
I'm avoiding eBay though. Not just because of postage, but because of those buyers who will try the printer, not know how to use it properly and have a failed print, and then return it as 'item faulty' or 'not as described'. With eBay policies, not only are your forced to accept the return and refund, but also liable for return postage cost as well - so out fee's as well as postage both ways, and have had someone mess with the printer!
I'd try a local sale, or collection only sale, if possible. That way the buyer can come and see the printer in action before taking it - see that its in perfect working, then take it away knowing the rest is up to them!!
I even have the original box and all accessories too!

Like I said, not on the MK4 upgrade page.
RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
I agree with specialized items like this, Ebay sales become a headache really quick, it's more trouble than it's worth. Try reddit see if you can find someone local.
RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
Why are they still comparing print times MK3 normal mode to MK4 draft mode ????? You would think they would correct this by now.
RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
Yep; I have seen more than a few inconstant data descriptions depending on the page I reference. However; the number of said issues has dropped.
My understanding is that the new print head configuration which is in 3.9 & 4.0 upgrades results in the larger vertical space for printing. I don't remember which specific change in the Prusa Live show indicated why they picked up the additional space but it was referenced there. I am poking at some of the pictures to help determine what items from the "S" and "+" upgrades to the MKIII are needed for the conversion to the MKIV. I now the red filament sensor will (maybe) be required to be updated. Without a 100% parts list on the IV upgrade I will just have to wait.
Hmm, the new filament out sensor has hall effect. Every time I find something in the S+ upgrade my research indicates that item is upgraded in MK IV or not needed.
RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
Honestly its better to get the kit instead of the upgrade but for me I dont want to deal with selling (scams, meeting a starnger and my time) I also dont have the room for 2 printers. I print for fun for my family and friends when they need stuff. I like the new features so its the upgrade for me. What bothers me is they are calling it a full upgrade and being told its the same when it not. For the upgrade price they can easily have included the frame. Feels like they squeezing more profit. This will be my 3rd upgrade from the orginal MK3. Then in then other hand I cant complain becouse they've keeped my original relevant.
RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
It looks to me like the upgrade would be some major surgery on a 3+ year old but fine performing printer.
I'm definitely going to hold off on anything at this time.
However, if I go for a MK4, I will probably just get the new kit as opposed to tearing down one that is performing quite well. It looks like the upgrade will be close to a true trap door (once you go through, you can't easily go back) experience.
RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy
The extra height comes from how the extruder is mounted on the x-axis. It’s only 1cm extra room. The upgrade kits do not include the new frame. No real need for it.
