RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy

Did you buy it in the last 30 days? If so, you'll get a $150 USD voucher by email to cover the difference in price, as the MK3+ kit price dropped by $150 when the MK4 came out. You could use that to buy an MK4 kit for $650 instead of the normal $800.

I didn't, it sat in the box for a few months until I had the time to do the assembly.  That's good for others to know though.  This is my first 3D printer so I'm sure the MK3S+ can do plenty to keep me pacified for some time.  It's just a little frustrating to miss a new product release when it seems so many things got upgraded.  Will be interesting to watch the side-by-side comparisons in the coming weeks to see how big of a functional gap there actually is.

RE:

Man, I just finished upgrading my MK3s to a 3S+ and to Moon X&Y Steppers, Revo kit and Bondtech Extruder. I upgraded the X&Y-axis printed parts and tensioning systems.  The improvement in prints was much larger than I thought it would be esp on the vertical flat surfaces. Only thing I really would love to have on the MK4 is the Tap sensor auto 1st layer. I'm hoping there will be someway just to mod that into what I already have. I guess I will wait and see. I'm very happy with the print quality of my MK3S+ now and for speed, well i am in the process of building a Voron 2.4 R2.

Don't neglect to tune your printer though. I just did a Benchy on a used Mini I bought and the output is better than my MK3S+. Some decent anti-vibration feet is a good place to start as the Mini I got has the squash ball feet and my MK3 doesn't.

Hi Jseyfert,

did they mention anything about the new Bed being included in one of those upgrades?

I don't see anything about a new bed.

I mean, if you have the extra $200, getting the Mk4 AND keeping your Mk3S makes sense.  But for all intents and purposes, the upgraded Mk3 will be a Mk4.  the frame will make very little difference. I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference in the finished piece.

The MK4 doesn't use a new heatbed:

We went through many iterations and since one thing often led to another, we eventually changed and improved more than 90% of the MK3S+ parts! The only things we kept the same are the Y-axis profiles, a couple of bearings, the heatbed and the power supply. Yes, even the frame is different.

What are your concerns about the current bed?

I think $150 is good compensation.  Then again, I understand the anger.

Is there going to be a "sympathy kit" for those of us who finished building their MK3S+ on Monday, only to get hit with the MK4 on Wednesday?  🤣 / 😫

That said, for the pricing involved, I can't see it making much sense to buy the "full" upgrade kit.  Having two printers is worth an extra $200, especially when the upgraded one wouldn't be 100% the MK4.  The more interesting question will be if any of the partial upgrade kits prove to be good bang for the buck.

Check eBay and I think you will be surprised what people are paying.

RE: Mk3 to Mk4 its not a full upgrade. Not happy

In a way I feel your pain.  I literally just finish refurbishing my printer last week, reprinted all parts, replaced all bearings, replaced all belts, heater, thermocouple, etc.  The reason they don't announce these things is because most people would wait for the release.  I also had the XL on preorder, and decided to forego that wait for 2x MK4s.  I don't really need the vertical build volume and get more X and Y build volume for less money this way.

My guess on the timing and price here is that there is much higher margin and demand for the smaller printers and they're probably trying to use that to push the queue XL behind the scenes.  Pure speculation.

Sometimes it's just not that big of a deal.  I have a Shaper Origin and when they released the V2 recently I was freaked out... until I saw the updates.  Yes, they are nice, but nothing I feel like I need to have.  On the other hand, MK3S+ -> MK4 looks like a pretty significant jump so I am feeling obsolete on week 1 🙁  I guess the real takeaway is that I should have bought an MK3S+ 3 years ago?  haha

RE:

I pulled the trigger on the MK3 to MK4 upgrade...

I have two MK3 printers, one is the base version and the other is a MK3S+ which is not much more than a few months out of the upgrade cycle.

I am still flipping the coin which one will get the hardware upgrade.  Due to the age of the older MKIII, going the full kit might well be worth it while keeping the machine useful versus being really out of date.  I can keep the swap out parts as spare for the other printer.

In the blog article on the anouncement it mentions „ new expansion joints under the heatbed to compensate for thermal expansion“. That made me believe there was a new bed. And since a level bed is significant i thought it would be part of a full upgrade kit ( esp. at the price close to a complete kit)

I actually have no need for an upgrade, since it works perfectly well, i just want one. I just installed a revo and love it - unfortunatelly prusa parted with e3d for a most compareable nozzle design.

„ new expansion joints under the heatbed to compensate for thermal expansion“.

there is  a new fixation of the heatbed, maybe this is meant with expansion joints:

Dont be unhappy....it is going to be awesome either way!

Besides, you will probably be able to buy a new Mk4 frame at some point and then you can switch it out.  I predict it makes no discernible improvement over stock for 98.2% of prints.

True, but I'd always wonder how those 1.8% of prints would have looked. haha! I'm most likely going to upgrade my two MK3S+ that I purchased recently with the MK4 and then try to sell my old ones. I was thinking I could list on Ebay, but shipping an assembled printer seems like it would be a pain. I need to check if the assembled printer will fit in the original kit box. I don't think it will offhand, but maybe I'm wrong.
