Is there any benefit to a heat block sock in an enclosure?

Hello all,

My Mk4 is in a fairly cold room, so I had a sock on the heat block. I have now put it in an enclosure. Is there any benefit to leaving it on? Any drawback?

Thanks!

Your heatblock will remain clean from the filament overrun sticking to it.

The silicone sock does not even serve to insulate the thermal block. Rather, it has the task of keeping the heating block and nozzle clean. And if something happens to the nozzle and mass starts to accumulate on the nozzle and the heat block, it is easier to clean this crash.

Keeping it clean is a main benefit, the insulation is however a benefit too. The point is that strong variation in part cooling does impact the heat loss of the hotend. A silicone sock insulates to some degree against that air blow and reduces therefore the variable impact towards heatloss and makes it easier to secure a constant hotend temperature.

That said, a silicone sock is not strictly necessary but it is beneficial.
