MK4 x axis self test failure

Just received my new MK4. Ran the self test twice. Both times the x axis test failed. What should I do?

RE: MK4 x axis self test failure

Came here to post the exact same thing. The paper included with the printer says it passed. Not sure how that could be unless it got jostled during shipping. Can't get onto support chat until much later, if anyone has ideas please let us know!

I went ahead and printed the test scraper. It appears to have printed perfectly.

I chatted with support. They had me send them a video of me manually moving the print head back and forth on the x axis, followed by depressing the x axis belts with my finger. After that they had me perform another self test. This time, all tests passed. They thought from the video that perhaps the x axis belt was a wee bit loose and suggested that I tighten it if the self test fails again after I’ve used the printer for awhile.

Darn it, I just tried that and it still fails. I guess I'll get on with support in a little bit.

I guess I ended up having to loosen the belt a little. Strange how it could have become tighter during transport?? They provided the link on how to tighten the belt in small increments but that didn't work and eventually caused the red screen. So I backed way off on the tension and it passed. Yikes.

RE: MK4 x axis self test failure

Another reason could be a loose screw on the pulley of the x-axis motor. That happened to me today.

One screw was holding the pulley in place while the other was so loose (almost falling out), that it started scratching on the orange motor mount. That caused layer shifts and at the end x axis selftest failure and the mk4 could not home anymore...

RE: MK4 x axis self test failure

I assembled my kit. I encountered this test failure because I did not secure the zip ties on the rear of the carriage cable support correctly. The zip tie head was making contact with the power supply case before "bottoming-out" against the side rail. See the yellow bullet point on step 25 of section 4 in the assembly guide. "Tighten both zip ties so that the "heads" fit into the pockets of the plastic part."

The tolerances of the MK4 are so exact, the head travel was stopped 0.5mm short of the expected distance. Thanks to Steve on the support line for helping me track down this issue. The X carriage should be able to travel to the left and right so far that none of the steel rods can be seen at the maximum left and right travel.

My X-axis self test failed because the LoveBoard-cover-right was not snug against the right side of the extruder (MK4 Kit).  It prevented the X-carriage assembly from being able to travel all the way to the right.  Assembly manual Section 5, Step 39.

Hi there,

just an information for whom who just finished their kit. Don’t use the alpha firmware for the self-test! Use the 4.6.4 instead. My x axis test constantly failed. Tried everything together with the support. No chance until I got back to the 4.6.4. After that the self test passed without failures at first try. The extruder calibration is also missing in the alpha firmware.

I also have this issue now too. I can only get it to pass X axis self test if I remove that cover. Then just put it back on after the self test completes because otherwise it prints perfectly fine.

I feel like that piece still needs a revision or two, or maybe my belt is too tight or loose...

I also have issues with the x axis test not passing. When it fails it seams like the software crashes and it reboots, is this how your test failed as well?

RE: MK4 x axis self test failure

I have the same issue. X axis calibrations fails and I found it was due to Love board right cover was in touch with trapezoidal nut / trapezoidal nut screw  during the movement to the right. I tried to re-seat it but still no success. It mounted with only one screw on the right and cables pushing it a little bit out. I will try today using M3x10 low head screw on trapezoidal nut but I am not sure if it will help. Without the cover, test pass successfully.

RE: MK4 x axis self test failure

For me it was the X-axis Idler pulley which did not fall in place and introduced a lot of friction.

Because of this friction i had to reduce the belt tensionm tremendous before the calibration finished.

After pushing from behind on the pin it fell in place and everything worked.

Had the same issue, and support helped me as well.

RE: MK4 x axis self test failure

Having printed for a few hours already I was bouncing between firmware and the X-Axis kept failing the self test after previously passing.  Anything with a screw going into a printed part was 1/4 to a full turn loose.  After tightening the screws to the X-Axis motor it passed the self test.  So after you have been up and running for a while, double check to make sure all of your screws are still tight.

Sharing my x-axis test failure and resolution.

Finished my kit today and received all green checks save for the x-axis.

The cause was the "LoveBoard-cover-right" (Chapter 5, step 38 and 39) was not flush to the Nextruder Assembly. The gap was just under 1mm but it was enough to cause an error. After reseating the cover the error cleared.
