RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time

Unbelievable!  My replacement printer has been working fine for ~2 weeks, and tonight it started locking up minutes after the print starts.  Along with that, I am back to the flickering screen that eventually goes black.   2 printers, both defective.  The MK4 was rushed and is not ready for distribution.

I know this isn't acceptable for a production unit but have you tried what has suggested on the previous page? Separating the Display cable from the motor cables would be a pretty simple fix if it works.

Upgraded to 5.0.0 Alpha 2 and this issue has not resurfaced, so hopefully it's been fixed.

I found the issue.  It is definitely an electrical interference issue with the printer.  I had the printer in one of the Creality soft-side enclosures with the tinfoil looking interior, and removing the printer eliminated all the issues.   I run and MK3S, Mini, and Crality printer in this case without issue, but the MK4 can't deal with it.

I have new MK4 kit printer assembled yesterday. From the beginning I have weird issues with LCD. Most of the times during power up display going black. I contacted support yesterday and today. The asked me to replugging the LCD ribbon cable on both sides, I did it but it doesn't help. They also asked me to flash 5.0.0-alpha3 firmware. They told me that they will relay this to their QA to see and check if there might be anything else to investigate, and they will update me. This definitely doesn't look good.

Exact same issue I saw with both MK4's.  Try moving your display ribbon cable away from any other wires, and make sure it is separated as much as possible in the main electronics box.  Based on my personal experience/situation, I am convinced it is electrical interference triggering this issue.  Also, if your desk/platform is metal, trying moving it to a non-metal table.

Yesterday I shipped back my MK4 for RMA. Fingers crossed.

My replacement printer hasn't had any blank screen issues so hopefully yours is the same.

Did you get a replacement printer? I was told that they will fix and return my original printer.

Thanks,
gabriel

Mine was a replacement printer.  They shipped the replacement shortly after the freight company picked up the original printer.

Thanks for the feedback. Possibly they ran out of replacements? I am fine with receiving the original one for as long as it works as expected even if it will take a little longer.

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time

Hi guys, I think I have the same problem. After assembling the kit and starting the printer the screen always work fine during boot. But then just start flashing white and going black. I tried to update the firmware and tge screen was working fine. After updating just the same. During boot it is fine, but then just glitching.

It looks like it that after the steppers are switched on, the lcd goes glitchy.

I will report this to support, but I will be not at home this week.

I hope there will be fix for this.

And the video:

That's pretty much how mine was behaving. The boot gets to about 50% and then the screen goes blank. As others have noted this seems to coincide with the steppers being turned on. I sent videos to support and their first thought was a loose cable so those were checked, then they sent a new xBuddy board but that didn't help. I finally received a new printer (I also had one of the bad motors from the early batch) and as mentioned above I have not seen the issue on the new printer. I haven't checked to see if the cables are routed differently or if there are any other obvious changes, just happy its working!

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time

@sole4y @ironfan72 that's exactly what my printer was doing too, the cause is indeed the motor cables passing interference into the display cable! Refer to the post I made previously (in page 1), I fixed it by moving the stepper cables far from the display ribbon cable, routing them behind the xbuddy board.

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time

Mine did not do that. Mine was fine as the print was starting. Then some time later it would just do one of these:

  • completely go out
  • partially go out - some parts of the display would show the actual content
  • change the color palette - like displaying stuff in nuances of magenta and just the shell of the part, not the solid part (weird, right?)

If the solution lies indeed in smart cable routing you would think that Prusa would adopt it like super fast. Are they doing that?

Regards and thanks for the videos and stuff.

I'll post there the behavior of the repaired printer when i get it back in a few weeks.

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time

I am waiting to receive the kit (not yet shipped). I would be happy if when they will ship the kit, the issue will be already solved by Prusa. If the solution will involve replacing defective or not good quality parts that half work (e.g. the LCD), I would prefer to have the shipment delayed and have good parts and update instructions instead of loosing time to ship back parts or struggle with semi-defective parts.

However, It would be interesting to have an oscilloscope on the LCD side power pins and capture the power data during the setup phase, to see if as example there are voltage drop, or spurious signals on the DC power. May be the DC just drops below 4.6V and the LCD logic hangs.

For now I will wait, hoping not to do all the troubleshooting on my kit.

Totally agree with Antimix, but i´m also happy that my kit changed to in progress today.

Someone else recognized the change to assembly manual 1.01 with new version of xLCD? Would be pretty interessting if the users with issues have the A or B version or if its really just the different position of the PE connection point.

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time

After a few days of successful printing, I encountered an issue this morning where my LCD screen was blank upon booting up, similar to what was shown in the videos mentioned above. I flashed the firmware to version 4.7.1, which allowed the printer to boot up, but the screen was flickering intermittently as if there was interference.

To troubleshoot the issue, I made sure to double-check that the ribbon cable was properly seated in both the LCD and buddy board. I also gently adjusted the cables to see if that would make a difference, and so far, the printer has been functioning fine. I reached out to Prusa support regarding the problem, and they requested photos of the LCD and buddy board for further analysis. They have advised me to refrain from using the printer until they have a chance to investigate on their end.
