Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
Sorry if this has already been mentioned before but I couldn't find any mention of it in search.
Received my Mk4 on Friday, and overall it has been within my expectations. I upgraded to the latest firmware 4.6.2 and besides having the intermittent "I2C receive fail" red screen of death that ncessitates a reboot, the screen sometimes goes blank after a print is completed. No amount of clicking or turning of the wheel will bring it back, so a reboot is needed. Is this a known "feature" or is it a bug?
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
I've had my screen go blank at various times, including during a print but the print did complete successfully. I contacted support and they asked me to check all connections and when these were confirmed to be tight, they concluded it might be a problem with the xBuddy board so they arranged an RMA for the board. I'd suggest you contact support and see what they can do to help you.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
Oh, it does not sound good either.
During the MakerMuse YouTube Live Streaming for Prusa Assembled MK4 unboxing he got a similar issue. The LCD went suddenly black and stopped to work. 😨
Here is few seconds before it happened...
I couldn't image the expression of Joseph if it was looking the live streaming in that moment... 😏 (as Murphy's laws teaches....)
Then he was able to fix the LCD by chance by playing around with the cables. Look at the video.
Regards

I am having the same issue. Did this resolve your issue?

Haven’t had a chance to install the new board yet, will report back once I have

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
Just installed the new xBuddy board and the problem isn't fixed 🙁
At least 30% of the time when I turn the printer on the screen goes blank when the boot progress bar reaches about halfway. Let's see what support says about it tomorrow.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
That is unfortunate. I elected to have Prusa replace my printer because they had no real idea what could be causing the issue, and we were just throwing parts at it and hoping for the best.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
Prusa support have decided to replace my printer too. After the xBuddy exchange didn't help they weren't sure where the problem was and so it's easier for them to replace the printer and troubleshoot mine in the factory.
Fingers crossed the new printer doesn't have the problem because when it works the printer is great.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
I wonder how this works for people who build their own kit. If they end up spending hours and hours building and then the screen starts cutting out, will they replace with a prebuilt (since the hours wasted as a consumer are significant) or replace parts or a whole new kit which would require a dozen hours again?
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
...and this is the reason why they are delaying the kit shipments.

welp, I have the same problem and I had the kit... reseating the cable solves it for a minute or two and then it comes back. Contacted support, I don't know if it's the cable or one of the boards... we'll see!
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
Any news?
Interested to see what they will do with a kit version......

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
I'm waiting for support, but playing around I now think it's the stepper motor wires that throw interference into the display cable.
It works for a bit because when the motors aren't doing anything there's less interference, and it blanks while printing because, well, motors are moving. That would also explain why it's completely fine while turning on until the "progress bar" reaches the middle and the printer beeps... That's when the motors activate (you can even hear them or feel it by touching them)!
That's my hypothesis, I followed the assembly guide to a tee but I'll try routing the display cable to be more separated from the stepper wires and see how it goes- if there's enough length. Those wires are exactly as long as they need to so it will be slightly difficult
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
The replacement printer seems to be fine. I am really curious what is causing this issue with some printers. My gut tells me there is a quality issue with one of the components they use, and every unit going out the door is a roll of the dice.
That is unfortunate. I elected to have Prusa replace my printer because they had no real idea what could be causing the issue, and we were just throwing parts at it and hoping for the best.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
I have the same issue with my MK4. The LCD goes blank but the print goes all the way. I reached out to support by email and the guy recommended a few things but then stopped responding. I'll go on live chat later today.
I have other issues with the printer but not related to this thread.
I really love the MK3S+ and that is why i bought the MK4. Hopefully these are just growing pains.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
Just received my replacement printer and so far so good, the printer booted fine, completed the self-test without issues and is now printing its first print with the screen still on. Fingers crossed it stays this way.
As a side note it is also much quieter especially on the first layer so I'm pretty sure I had one of the very early printers with the bad motors.
RE:
Update on my situation, support asked me to replace the display and cable but before sending I tried turning the printer on with the cable as far away from other electronics as possible- and would you look at that, it works!
This gave me hope, and I started re-routing all the motor cables under the xbuddy board, so that they wouldn't be close to the display cable (that I put back in its normal place), and the grounding in the board shields the interference.
[I'll add a picture later]
If you are comfortable with unscrewing a few screws and doing 20 minutes of work it's a pretty easy fix, just be careful with the thermal pads on the back of the board, and lay the cables flat so that you don't put pressure on the board when screwing it back in!
I told this to the support agent (super cool dude by the way), he told me that it was fine and to report back in a few days to see if the problem is fixed. Don't wanna jinx myself but the display has been running fine since.
It would be cool if they updated the guide to route the cables a different way, or if they used a shielded display cable to avoid this altogether for sure.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
@FAB1150 That is what happened on a live streaming to Makers Muse with the unboxing of the MK4. After the LCD stop to work he turned off the printer and played around with the flat cables and connectors, and then turning it on, it worked again. We are waiting to see the MK4 full test and impression video.

RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
In my case we suspect that the (factory assembled) printer was damaged during shipping and handling - the packaging box bears signs indicating that.
To give you guys a little more context, in addition to the LCD going blank or changing colors or maybe just displaying parts of the picture, I have had nozzle cleaning errors, as well as errors 13202 and 13315.
RE: Mk4 screen goes blank after some time
@Antimix Oh yeah that was the video that prompted me to try moving the cable around! I found it in this thread so thanks 🙂
