Should I do a firmware upgrade?
I got an i3 MK3S+ kit just over 3 years ago and got it working satisfactorily. For one reason or another I haven't used it for about 9 months and apart from the fact it seems to have gone out of calibration, I am looking at upgrading the firmware. The current firmware according to the Support section of the control screen is 3.11.0-4955, but I see that the current issue is 6.4.0; this seems a huge jump in issues and this is confusing me.
Can someone give me guidance please.
Rob
RE:
My philosophy is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.. I have a MK3S+ and have used for last 3 years. Just after firmware 3.11, Prusa added a thermal calibration to the mix which gave owners lots of headaches. And I mean lots.. In fact, made me lose faith with Prusa a bit. Now Prusa says the upgrade makes it safer.. but I have not updated mine and it works just fine. Mine is version 3.11.0. It will die on that FW. I print TPU / PETG / PLA almost daily. No issues.
RE: Should I do a firmware upgrade?
Current version for MK3S+ is still 3.14.1 according to prusa downloads.
At work we have it on our 2 MK3S+. One of them sometimes issues the thermal anomaly warning with higher temp filaments, the other one does not. At home I still have 3.12.2 on my 6 year old MK3S+ but I rarely use it since I got my XL. Regarding thermal conductivity/capacity: That MK3S+ has a nickel plated copper heat block, a plated 0.4mm brass nozzle, a titan heatbreak and PCCF plastic parts in its extruder but no silicon sock. If you update, please do a "thermal model calibration" which you find in the menu.
Improving safety I appreciate a lot. It is bad design or implementation if users become annoyed to an extent that they circumvent it.
RE:
I upgraded the firmware of my MK3S+ to the last version weeks ago. I haven't the printer at hand at this moment, so I can't tell exactly which version it is, possibly 3.14.1 according to the support page. No thermal calibration errors or issues, but I must be an exception to the rule, judging by the number of complains from many users.
BTW. firmware 6.4,0 mentioned by the OP, must be for another printer (3.5 or 3.9 perhaps ?). MK3S+ are still on versions 3.1x and probably Prusa won't bother to update it in a long time, if ever.
RE:
The MK3S+ Main MCU is an Atmega 2560 (see einsy-rambo-mk3-s). The firmware for the buddy board used in newer printers is not compatible with it. Hence the offered upgrade prusa-i3-mk3s-to-mk3-5-upgrade-kit-2.
On Prusa's github page you can see the repositories for the legacy Prusa-Firmware and the current Prusa-Firmware-Buddy. Nowadays, there is little activity in the legacy Prusa-Firmware.
RE: Should I do a firmware upgrade?
Many thanks to you all for your guidance. I'm not sure where I got the '6.2.4' bit from, but it was just as well I asked the question first, wasn't it !!
On the basis of Crab's comment, and what was said thereafter, it sounds as if sticking with what works is the sensible path to take.
So again, thanks
