@jurassic73

That is what I was thinking.  Not every print farm fills the sheet.

[...] I print a few things I sell on Etsy with small footprints.  On older sheets, I can see the wear in those spots since I continue to print from the same GCODE.  Having that shift around automagically would be great given the option.

Oh, I don't doubt that there is some need for it. It just seems to be an edge case that gets increasingly narrow as we get closer to it. We're now down to "print farms that only use a fraction of the bed space". And that doesn't take into account the desire to avoid bed defects in addition to randomization. This is definitely the sort of thing that could be done by OctoPrint or whatever Prusa releases for the Mk3 add-on, and be much more flexible than anything likely to be implemented in an already-crowded 8-bit firmware footprint. I'm sure the handful of individuals that need it and can use it will love it!

Secondary gripe - I do wish Prusa would work with existing development efforts instead of one-way forking off on their own thing. Contributing to OctoPrint would reduce development costs and time, support a fantastic existing open source project, and provide a built-in base of fanatical users that would benefit. They've done it with firmware, slicer software, and now apparently are planning to do it with a print server module. Open source I guess, but with a control freak slant. Or at least sponsor Gina's development of OctoPrint. I love Prusa, but the whiff of "not invented here" mindset is a concern.

Make a couple of gcodes with the parts swizzled around, name them day1, day2, day3, ...

Amen to the first part. Also, I assume those running farms at that scale are using software like Octoprint or Prusa Connect, and maybe that's were it belongs. Use the slicer to generate one gcode, use your farm control software to perform whatever transformations are require to the gcode to randomize use of the sheet, let firmware execute the gcode

Re the second part, well, one aspect of open source has always been forking, for better or worse. As long as it's good stuff they're producing I'm happy.

I don't think was a bad idea.  There are probably other ways to accomplish it.  I move the print around the bed on my own.

I never liked Octoprint. It is a great project, that does a lot of interesting things, I just don't like it. It might be because it has grown way beyond what most of us need, it might be that it always bugged me that cancelling a print still has some lines of buffered gcodes to do or it might be that I had some SD prints cancelled when I connected the USB (not Octo's fault and I now know that you can disable that behaviour), it might be something else.

So I kind of like to see a new approach, but that's all off topic to this thread 🙂

I understand how it does not meet every need or like, but like you say it is a good project.

Octoprint rules for my purposes.  Running on a Pi4B+ with 4G of RAM.  Works really well and adds nicely to the printing experience in many ways.

RE: What would you like to see in the 8-bit firmware?

Doesn't anybody else need to be able to set a custom Preheat temperature? Am I the only one?

Why do I need that you would ask?

I have multiple printers.

I use an SST nozzle on all of them, so my PET-G printing temperatures are always higher than if I was printing with stock brass nozzle.

I always print PET-G with the first layer @252°C.

Before printing I always preheat to 252°C and wait multiple minutes until the filament stops spilling out of the hotend nozzle so that it wouldn't leave tiny plastic marks on the heatbed while doing first layer calibration before printing, and also so that the spilling plastic wouldn't stick to the nozzle and blob not even a bit while calibrating. I need quality.

So.

For me to preheat to my desired 252°C I must first go to the preheat menu and preheat it to the offered PET-G temperature, and after that I must again go in the menu and go deeper in settings to rotate and set the nozzle temperature to 252°C, and it all must be done on multiple printers multiple times a day.

It takes extra time to do it that way.
It takes extra button pushes and rotary switch wear to do it that way.
It must be improved.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to accomplish but wouldn't adding a G4 command to the startup GCODE accomplish this? Eg G4 S120 should wait for 2 minutes. Caveat: I have not tested it directly.

I do preheat to a particular temp to unload to clean the hotend.

I set my preheat temp in my custom gcode. Every print preheats to exact what I want it to, does the bed level, then heats to print temp. No gnats, no fuss.

RE: What would you like to see in the 8-bit firmware?

Jakob - after pondering the subject for quite a while. What every Prusa Printer needs, 8-bit or 32-bit or even the next 64-bit that I am sure someone at Prusa is dreaming about designing:

A 6G cell phone interface linked to the printer lcd LIKE counter.  Obviously, one of the most significant problems users have is not being able to be LIKED by all their friends and neighbors and fellow print nuts. Imagine the satisfaction owners of Prusa printers will have when they see the LIKES coming in. Prusa can even dedicate a forum page to the weeks most LIKED printer. And, Prusa can make the USB dongle that adds the 6G cell service, and sell it for a ton of money because you know everyone will want one.

The worlds problems solved ... ahh ... I feel all warm and fuzzy now.... wait, maybe that's the Scotch.

RE: What would you like to see in the 8-bit firmware?

@fuchsr

No, that wouldn't help because it is not specifically 2 minutes.  It's a random amount of time which I use for preparing the SD card.

The sequence usually is like this:

-Previous print finishes
-Take of the magnetic sheet for the old print to come of quickly and easy
-Set printer for Preheat and then again set my needed 252°C
-Take the old print off the plate
-Put back magnetic plate on printer
-Clean the plate as it again warms up
-The nozzle starts to slowly pour out some plastic
-Take the SD card out and go to the PC
-Put on a new gcode on the SD card
-I wait a random amount of time for the nozzle to stop pouring out plastics, while I still do some other work
-After that random amount of time I go back to the printer being sure the nozzle doesn't pour plastic out anymore
-Clean the nozzle with tweezers (not a wire brush because it can scratch some wire sealing and also my prints are not higher than 15mm, therefore the hotend is too close to the bed and it would take more work and time to change the Z height)
-Only then I put in the SD card so that the first thing that appears on the LCD is the printable file
-Pick the file and the printer starts its work and at that time I'm sure it won't stick any small dots of plastics on the plate while doing first layer calibration.

I need to get rid of that extra going into the menu, going to settings, picking temperature and adjusting nozzle temperature each and every time for all of my printers every time. That takes time, wears off the printer rotary switch with button and would be much easier for me to if in the preheat menu there was simply one extra line with custom settable preheat temperature.

And fix the file selection so it doesn't jump to another file after selecting.
File selection is AFAIK the only place with this prankster behaviour

Randomization could be "easily" provided by relocating position 0,0 CNC style
Set your new X/Y offset if you want, don't or reset it when you no longer need it, no GCODE manipulation needed...

Are you running 3.10.0? That should be pretty much fixed already, the SD card menu is now much more responsive and the sorting is way quicker too 🙂

Just installed it a couple of days ago.
I haven't had any problems yet, but upto now I always take my time to make the selection.
It appears to roar it's head always when you're in a hurry, so slowing down helped.
Very glad you've got it fixed !!!
