What To Do With Older 3D Printer - Upgrade From Prusa i3 MK3S To Prusa CORE One

I ordered a Prusa i3 MK3S kit back in 2020 and only used the printer lightly for about 2 years.  I'm a beginner and my experience with that printer was less than positive with many print failures that I believed to be attributed to many things with one main one being the first layer adhesion was bad.  I gave up on using the Prusa i3 MK3S due to the bad experience and now I'm jumping into a Prusa CORE One kit, but I'm not sure what I should do with the older printer.  I don't think its garbage, but I'm not feeling positive about what the root cause of print failures is/was.  I love solving problems, but now when they're week long boogie-men sucking up all available time to try to pinpoint or discover.  Any suggestions or was my experience likely due to something else like a bad year of the slicer or firmware?

Bad adhesion is often a combination of poor live Z adjustment and build plate cleanliness.

I wash my build plate with dish soap and hot water, then Rinse well with plain hot water and dry immediately with hot water.

And I use the 'Life adjust ZMy way' process to get a good first layer, often raising build plate (Bed) temperature to 70c also helps.

Give your MK3 another go, while you wait for your Core1.

I'll give that calibration process a go to see if that's all that was needed.

The filament on the printer spool has been sitting out for all these years attached to the printer getting no use and likely absorbing moisture and dust probably stuck to it as well.  Is there any technique to recover that or is it destined for the trash?

if it's PLA, I Would give it a go without messing about.

another option is to de humidify the filament. however a de humidifier will probably cost more than a new roll of filament.
you can de humidify filament in some electric ovens...  but it's a risk,

you could thread the filament through a piece of sponge  to act as a dust remover.

I am facing the same question.  I elected to upgrade.

As I have many printers I still use my MK3S+ for most of my PLA prints as they are usually packaging items and don't take long to print.  I've put it up for sale at a firm price and if someone buys it I may get another MK4S or another Core 1.

My MK4S  are my workhorse and has the best print quality of any Prusa at this point in time when using the structural settings. (Better than the XL)

I mainly bought a Core one to get into printing some higher temp filaments as the current Prusa enclosure doesn't really get hot enough to minimize warping. If the print quality on the Core one ends up better than the 4S than I may buy another one, but the initial reviews seem to point at the 4S having better quality right now. This may likely change with time and firmware updates.

I will say that originally the MK4 print quality was only ok, but as they did firmware updates the print quality started to shine. I admittedly was a little disappointed that the XL didn't have superior print quality not being a bed slinger, but I think the 1.8° stepper motors are the limiting factor. (This is just my guess)

I realized after I posted this I probably should have used the words `Replace` instead of `Upgrade`.  I forgot that Prusa offers an upgrade path from older models to newer ones.  I'm just making sure its clear to anyone that reads this I'm not doing that.  I'm buying a whole new kit to replace the old one I mothballed due to the shenanigans I explained on first post.
