What causes loaded filament to be more brittle overnight?

This is purely anecdotal, but I've found that filament I leave loaded in my machine overnight will be broken in 3 places between the spool and extruder. Even trying to bend the filament it just snaps like wood. The spool sits above an enclosure and enters it via a narrow slot. If I leave the same spool sitting on top of the enclosure but not loaded it doesn't get brittle. I've had some PLA sitting out in my room for months without being anywhere near this brittle. It just seems to be if something is loaded overnight it becomes completely worthless.

Perhaps filament on the reel is in a relaxed state, and filament loaded into the extruder has been extended into a straighter form, which may start microfractures which propagate over the hours.

I have seen this in the past also. The filament just above the head breaks after being in that position for some time usually at least a day or two. It only happens with some filament and not PETG.  I have thought that it may be ozone from the process or?

If filament gets damp and begins to swell unevenly you get micro cracks, if stressed they propagate.

An unwound strand is particularly vulnerable to humid air whilst that on the spool is partially protected.
