Unable To Install PLA Filiment-Get Grinding Sounds As Filiment End Is Ground Off

Have printed thousand plus items, no issues.  Built kit in August, now with firmware 3.9.3-3556.

Left a project printing today and returned to find it only half done (smooth  open top) with extruder returned to corner as if it had finished.  No strings or melted filament on heat bed.  Removed filament and then autoloaded it (or tried to).  Got grinding noises as filament pointed end was ground off.  Filament was then stuck, but not through gears, but stuck as if in gears.  Had to unload it again.

Have done a factory reset and it failed its self-test, telling me that to check for a  loose pulley in the motor (?).  What does this mean?  I assembled this Prusa i3 MK3S+ kit and this does not ring a bell at all, nor can I find anything in the Prusa Assembly Instructions.

You help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I bet you can a complete clog. If you can't even insert the fillament. Start with removing/chaning nozzle.

hooch,

Thank you for your reply.  I've done that and I now am able to actually get a filament inserted and to flow from the print head, but am getting all sorts of odd blobs and matted material instead of a nice printed line.  Even though I spent some time cleaning the outside of the print head, inserting several 0.4mm nozzle cleaning needles all the way to the top inside and heating the head to ABS temp just to try and melt any PLA fragments stuck inside, I get ugly blobs and what look like ugly balls of melted filament.

Is it possible that there are fragments or something inside the heat head that are causing the melted filament flow to not being able to maintain a constant (even) flow?

Might I need a new print head?

Thanks again for your advise and if you are unable to answer my questions, hopefully someone else seeing this thread will have an answer.

@dan-28

I had similar issues in the past have you done some cold pulls? Depending on the brand of filament some of them have different additives inside that can clog your extruder I would trying to replace the nozzle (after trying some cold pulls) you can get them for a reasonable price. If you do please be sure to watch the YouTube video on changing nozzles first it is very easy to mess things up if you don't do it correctly.

Loose pulley in the motor, could be loose belts, or loose grub screw.

Try to do a cold pull to clean out nozzle, search forum or prusa website for the manual.

Try different filament.

I had a clog because bad filament, after using different filament, cleaning with a needle 10 or 15 times , it worked again.

Now that you have flow, it would be beneficial to do a proper cold pull. Lookup instructions on YouTube. This way you will remove every last bit of rubbish from the system.
