RE: Thingiverse migration tool questions

Hi eried,

just out of curiosity, I had a peek at your designs uploaded to Thingiverse. What a wealth of designs, I am fascinated! Seems you are a model flying pilot (just like me) and a radio amateur as well? (just like me 😉  With your star ratings and with models dating back to 2011, you could add some real additional value to this site. I am looking forward so much to see your designs here on prusaprinters.org. Of course I could download them from Thingiverse, but I am getting more and more frustrated with that site.

I have now finally decided to upload my new and complete "Modular RC airplane" exclusively to prusaprinters.org within the next days. I had needed some project to keep me busy during the lock-down. Now that there is light at the end of the tunnel, with restrictions being lifted slowly but surely, I need to get done with this project now and of course I will share it with the rest of the world. May we be flying our planes again very soon!

Stay safe everyone, I am glad I found a new home for my designs here.

Has the tool been disabled or something? I can't seem to access it.

Hey thanks @herbert-1, yes I like RC planes and drones 😀 and it is awesome that you are designing that modular one, for sure I will check it out when it gets posted! I haven't designed my own full plane yet... It is still a big task for me, I am very amateur in planes.

Oh bummer. I though this tool was already done since it was anounced last year.

@joseamirandavelez

As I understand it, it was working and then they changed the site for no reason, I guess to add ads, which broke it.

Thingiverse gonna thingiverse.

Hi,

I get "All prints were imported as DRAFTS. You'll have to edit them one by one, add missing info and publish them", but they don't show up in the drafts, and there is an exclamation mark next to each image with "Error. Try again later.". See below:

@mtahtali

Hi,

is  it working for you? When i press the button "+ create", i just get to choose from "print" and "group" in the drop-down menu.

@ondrej-stritesky

Wow, nice, thanks a lot! I am importing my designs right now.

I have a quite popular design (13k remixes, 250 comments) which recently vanished without notice from Thingiverse (Sweeping 2-line name plate (text)). I can still see it myself when logged in, other users cannot. I am really unsure wether this is a bug or was intentional.

I reuploaded here on PrusaPrinters manually, so the importer will help me for sure!

I also reuploaded on Thingiverse, as they have the customizer functionality for OpenSCAD files. Will that be ever added to PrusaPrinters? Maybe on client-side?

@makkuro

Thank you for your uploads! I also know your print "Sweeping line plate" very well.

Unfortunately, we do not plan to customize in the foreseeable future. We have a number of other great ideas in stock to improve PrusaPrinters, as well as a supply of basic things that need to be done first. (STL previews, Likes, etc.)

@ondrej-stritesky

Ok, thanks for the info!

Maybe it would help to be able to post generic instructions how to use OpenSCAD somewhere, so i dont have to repeat it in every model.

Something like:

Using OpenSCAD for configuring your own text:

  • Download latest version of OpenSCAD, (See section "Development snapshots" at ( https://www.openscad.org/downloads.html ) )
  • Download the .SCAD file from here.
  • Open the .scad file in OpenSCAD.
  • Change the variables. You find them in the beginning of the .SCAD file. E.g. text="your text";
  • Set the fontname (either an installed one or one preinstalled on your system): fontname="Bangers";
  • Press "F5" to get a quick preview.
  • Press "F6" when you like the preview. This will render the geometry and takes a little time.
  • Press "F7" to save the geometry to an .STL file.
  • Slice and print the .STL file.

It would be nice to add a generic Wiki-Page to the profile page, which i can refer to from all models. (Printing / customizing instructions, etc)

RE: Thingiverse migration tool questions

Thanks a lot Ondrej, that is incredibly good news!

After getting tired about the lousy quality of the Thingiverse maintenance, I had started to post exclusively here on Prusaprinters.org. But that left some designs back at Thingiverse. Into some of them I had invested an insane amount of time. The most complex one has just now finished it's import from Thingiverse:

https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/33445-rc-skid-loader-110-scale

I am so happy to have completely arrived here now at Prusaprinters, as my new publishing platform.

Best regards,

Herbert

Looks like it worked. I had 2 of them that failed to grab the STL, but they were 2 of my oldest thingiverse uploads. so I have about 100 of my designs over here. It didn't grab the categories for any of them, and they all imported as draft, so setting those categories and un-drafting took a while, but they are there.

Finally imported things from thingiverse, thanks for the tool. But after import, I can't login to thingiverse anymore 🙂 It might be only coincidence and temporary issue. But looks weird 🙂

RE: Thingiverse migration tool questions

Obfuscating all extensions in the "Edit" screen is rather useless since we can't tell what files are what: strips all "extensions":

"widget.122.scad" => "widget"

"widget.121.stl" => "widget"

😲

Actually, I reviewed further and I can't really determine what's going on.  It's not just "everything to the right of the first "." but something more sinister.  It even looks like filename length might have been set shorter than Thingiverse, truncating names ?:

@wociscz

That must in fact be a coincidence for your specific account. I have imported quite a number of designs in the last few days since the import is working again and I have no problems whatsoever to login to Thingiverse.

I hope it works for again soon, but there does not seem to be a relation to the part import from Prusaprinters.

Best regards, Herbert

RE: Thingiverse migration tool questions

This is what the Thingiverse edit screen looks like, so it's definitely truncating filenames shorter, as you can see by the STL above ending in "...bushin".

It looks like we'd have to hand-check every attachment to ensure they were all moved correctly.  They likely don't want to have these types of problems for people, but I'm not sure where to report the issue to them.  Perhaps they'll see it here ?
