SUNLU ABS filament

Hi All,

New to 3D printing and have a question about this filament if anyone has used it and what your thoughts are and maybe some help with settings. I am concerned that the Prusa MK3 settings are running ABS at 255c and this brands specs on the box are a range of 220-240c which seems low for ABS from what info. I find online. The recommended table temps seem right in line with other brands 80-120c.

1. What happens when running filament above recommended temps?

2. I seem to be having issues with extrusion at 255c. Think it might be jamming. Seems to flow fine when loading filament but when I start a print it faulted out.

3. When I unloaded the filament after the print stopped it hung up and pulled the tube up in contact with the bondtech gears before it came free.

Appreciate any help or suggestions.

Hi Donnie,

Admission... I don't use any ABS
1, the waste products make me cough, and give me a bad chest
2, whilst I was getting my bad chest, I always got delamination problems because I didn't have an enclosure...

typically printing at too high a temperature normally doesn't cause clogged nozzles, it usually causes initial good inter layer bonding, sagging prints on higher layers and stringing on non printing moves

a friend printed the gear bearing on my Mk1 prusa, using PLA, at ABS temperatures... it was a bit messy, but it still worked when complete...

Ok, so your PTFE came adrift... need to fix that first!

the first two url's show you how to prepare the PTFE Tube,
the third gives you an idea how to change the tube... note the preparation of ptfe, in the third video is a bit suspect, hence the first two url's

once you have sorted the PTFE, and sorted the the live Z,
I would suggest re trying the printing.

as you have tried 255 centigrade, I would suggest,
use slic3r, set the print temperatures towards the middle of the recommended temperature range say 235 first layer, 230 other layers, and see what happens.

then get back to us...

Thanks Joan,

I was able to use the original PTFE tube and so far no issues, cleaned it up and removed burrs. May order some replacement tubes just in case.

Once I got the extruder back together I re-calibrated the printer and tried the ABS again at the manufacturers settings and was able to get a pretty much good part. With that said all I did was change the temp and left all the other settings at default but really think I might should have slowed down the speed for the cooler temp. the only thing that I can see that needed to be better was the little screw tab which had some droop when it went over the top of the tab.

I am mostly satisfied with the finished part but would like to know how to improve that one little fault.

Note: I was running the R3 noozle fan angle part for the improved extruder parts.

Hi Donnie,

Do you use the part cooling fan with ABS?

I thought that was a NoNo... thinking about the angled fan might be a red herring!

but as I said, I don't use ABS...

if unsupported parts are drooping a lot, you might still be printing a bit hot... try a bit cooler

Joan,

I just used what Prusa Control put in the gcode. I only saw the fan come on like once or twice during the printing and just figured that it was trying to cool the part during bridging type moves. I do not have an enclosure yet and was pretty pleased that I got as good a print as I did after doing some research online about printing ABS materials.

I guess the one thing that I really find hard to understand so far in the 3D printing world is just how much variation their is in the temps that users are setting within the same materials. I see that there are several manufacturers and sellers that have published temps for ABS filament in the 220-240c range but users are running this stuff as high as 260-270c I do know that each brand can have different formulas but you would think some kind of standard would help.

Just a thought, maybe the sensors and electronics being used in these printer are not all that accurate and the temps being shown are not that reliable. this would explain the huge swing in settings for the same brand and type of filament.

Different colours in the same brand can have different preferred temperatures.
filled filaments can have different temperatures especially metal filled filaments

I believe Rigid ink PLA has a recommended working temperature below the minimum prusa temperature

PLA alone, comes in standard, flexible and high temperature forms to name a few, each has it's own set of temperatures which again vary by colour and filler content, then there is virgin PLA and recycled PLA...

it's enough to drive you to Haribo gummibears...

May I ask why the angled fan improvement is a red herring?

As far as filaments go I guess I need to look at it with my machinist glasses on, as the same metal type from different manufacturers may take different cutting data to get the best results.

as I said earlier, I don't do ABS...

but as far as I am aware

ABS doesn't use cooling

if that is correct, it doesn't matter which way the fan is facing!

I think your machinist's view will help you understand the complexity better.

I am a Target shooter, bullets of the same weight and model, from the same manufacturer, but different batchs, may have different performance parameters.
1/8 of a degree divergence in the flight path is enough to completely miss the target!

Hello,

I tried to print with SunLu ABS filament. I changed the temperature of the extruder to 240° in Slic3r. The bed temp on first layer is 100°, the other layers are 110°.

My first time was with ABS, so I tried to print Benchy boat. I attached a picture about the error. At the begining it seems printed well, but later it started to molten... I don't know why.

I have also purchased the Sunlu ABS filament and I also find it starts off with good results however after about 20 layers the bridging is not sticking together and is all droopy. If anyone else is able to print this successfully on the PRusa please let me know what settings you use ?

Hello,

I have a big problem with warping, while printing SUNLU ABS (black and red) with the prusa i3 MK3 in an enclosure.Temp inside the enclosure is ~40C (if lower the warping is worse) and I've tried 230-240-255C nozzle temp and 100-110C heatbed temp. It sticks to the PEI sheet bed, no problem.

It warps like crazy, sometimes prints come out ok, most of the time it warps.

Is there a problem with the brand or the filament? Old and/or degraded.

Should I try other brands or ABS+, ASA, whatever?

What the hell am I doing wrong?
