Still can't upload source files (sldprt, ipt) to PrusaPrinters.org?

I like the value proposition of PrusaPrinters, considering Thingiverse is going downhill so fast. I myself own a Prusa, and I considered changing to PrusaPrinters many times, but there's no way I justify the effort without being able to upload the source files along with the STLs.

I know many site users will use the STLs as they are, but I already lost count of how many times I found the solution provided by a Thingiverse author was not quite what I needed, and I found it rather useful when the author was kind enough to upload the source files, because then I could use most of their design and just change what I needed for my application.

I am myself a mechanical engineer, and I find it is a disservice to the community for Prusaprinters not to have this feature. I mean, I was really considering going through the effort of migrating all files manually (now that Thingiverse is so broken that the auto-migration tool won't work), but what's the point? If I can't have my source files there for the public use (and also if I happen to lose them from my hard drive), then why would I go through this effort?

I'm just providing the feedback as a creator. I think more designers would be joining prusaprinters if they were allowed to upload their source files along with their STLs. As it stands right now, I will stick to thingiverse.

I read somewhere on this forum that you can put the files in a .ZIP file and upload that.

Just tested the upload of a ZIP file, in another post, and it definitely works.

Hi David,

could you (or anyone else that is reading this) give me a hint how you did that? I am desperately trying to upload an assembly instruction for a rather complex design (a 24MB large .pdf file with numerous pictures). I have tried to upload it as .pdf and as a .zip file that contains only this .pdf, but both failed. The webpage apparently looks into the .zip file, realizes that there is a .pdf inside and rejects the upload.

Which upload field did you use in the edit page? Maybe I am doing something wrong there...?

Thanks in advance,

Herbert

I'm having the same problem.  Did you find out how to upload PDFs?

Hi Craig,

nope, unfortunatelly I am still hoping that someone can tell me how to do this, or that Prusa enables at least the upload of some selected file types (like FreeCad files, Fusion360 files, PDFs of course, etc.).

So a shoutout to everyone that reads this and has an idea how to do it, please be so kind to let all of us know.

Happy printing everyone,

Herbert

System looks inside zip and rejects any file format unsupported - PDF is not supported.  I turned my PDF into a series of JPGs.  You will need Adobe or some other program other than the reader to do the conversion.   Hope Prusa will fix this.

I would also consider using PrusaPrinters for my uploads when I can include the native files. For now there are alternatives that can include native files, such as

https://grabcad.com/library

https://b2b.partcommunity.com/community/partcloud/index

https://www.thingiverse.com/

among many others.

prusa3d_manual_mini_de

I think PDF is no problem. Zipped data is usually also no problem either.
Zipping and "add media".

RE: Still can't upload source files (sldprt, ipt) to PrusaPrinters.org?

Now got me really interessted. Is the pdf file, that you linked to as an example, an official document that was uploaded by Prusa, or did you upload the file yourself? If you did it yourself, how did you upload it? From the URL it does not seem to belong to a certain published 3D design. But frankly, I would not care, as long as it is possible to link directly to the pdf (or zip if that is easier) from the particular page of one of my designs.

Concrete case that is troubling me right now: I have uploaded this rather complex design in the beginning of 2020:

https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/33445-rc-skid-loader-110-scale

I do have a complete mounting instruction created by now, which consists of quite a number of pages and is 24MByte with all the pictures. How can I upload it to somewhere in the Pursa universe and link to it from the above mentioned page?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Herbert

@herbert-1

Export the PDF as jpegs and then upload each jpeg one by one into pictures area of the web page.  I tried to zip the jpegs and then upload them, but it put them in a random order.

It's easy to get around this issue. Just rename you files to one of the supported file formats that is not processed by the uploader, like fusion's .f3d format.

For example: If you have a pdf called "my file.pdf", rename it to "my file.f3d" and upload it. Then tell people to open this file in a pdf browser, or tell them to rename it back to pdf again. I just tested it. It works 🙂 It can probably be used on any type of file.

you could rename files and post the information about restoring the file names...

or you could simply zip the files...

@herbert-1

I uploaded the PDF file directly from my hard disk, so it is not linked anywhere. I can demonstrate it again with an example of a self-made file:

berechnungen-forderschnecken

As far as I know the amount of data is limited to max. 10Mb.

I know that not everyone has the possibility, but I always save my projects on my own websites and then link them. There is also no size limit.
Alternatively I use since years grabcad.com. There I have published a lot of my projects.

RE: Still can't upload source files (sldprt, ipt) to PrusaPrinters.org?

Seems there is some confusion here. We are talking about uploading files to the 3d model pages, not the forum. PDF's are not a supported format that can be uploaded there, even if zipped. And this is where my renaming workaround comes in.

@volan

sorry, you are right! The file types for Prusa Print pages are quite limited. PDF's are not allowed (zip is also not allowed - it seems that Prusa looks, as has already been said, inside the zip file). A pity, because important documents are often saved in PDF format. As I said, I switched to grabcad.com. There are no restrictions in this respect.

@joantabb

Joan,

To clarify, I'm talking about uploading a PDF for the "let there be light" contest in the Photo's section.   I see no problems uploading to the forum.

Thanks,

Craig
