"Snag cutter" for tangled spools?

I have a couple spools that I f*ed up by letting them untangle for a bit and they've been snagging ever since.
When I print in single filament mode on my MK4S+MMU3 it also ejects the filament after the print is done, which results in the same issue.
So printing with these spools  is a bit heart-attack inducing as I have to mind every sound and run to the attic to check.
I could throw them away but, what a waste right?

I saw that someone made a snag cutter for the bamboo AMS and I wonder: Has anyone ever thought about doing this for prusa printers?
I'd love to have one of these that just fits on a piece of bowden and does its thing.

It's almost impossible for the manufacturer to tangle a spool so it comes down to handling at the user end ... To prevent loose end tangling store with clips or with the loose end threaded through one of the holes in the spool.

To prevent unload spring-back causing problems first thread the filament through a guide, a ring on a stick, so the end is still controlled.

And to untangle: slip coils of filament off the side of the spool until you are certain you have reached non-tangled layers and then respool by rotating the spool and guiding the filament on.

No need for a cutter, that is just going to waste filament.

Cheerio,

Thank you for your answer.
I am aware of all of that and yet I am asking the question.

I'm sorry, what?
Are you seriously asking me why I'm asking a question here? Or why your answer is not sufficient for me?
Either way: I don't think I owe you justification. Unless that is now written in the rules and I missed that?

I'm asking because. I. WANT. TO. KNOW.

I want to be a peacemaker here and so I will say this I think we don't want to look it up and you haven't told us what it does.

If I needed to cut a snag I guess I use sidecuts.

Is there a better idea possibly.

One thing that has helped me is filament cleaners on all my spools.  Makes it very hard to get the end tangled into the spool.

Looking at the cutters, that is a decent idea if it is fully automatic during a print as it will cut the filament and then you will get an out of filament error.  AMS snag cutter could be used on a Prusa printer depending on your setup.

I was hoping to find something that fits on a bowden instead of having a "seat" so it can be used for the XL or the MMU. I'm not really a champion designing things.

Something like what they did with the filament sensor for the mini... A little box on a bowden.

In my 10+ years printing I've experienced a lot of strange problems during printing (Below I've added an example that happened because of a specific house companion liking things that roll...) A lot of these resulted in a tangle and the print would've been saved if it was an "out of filament"-error instead of a tangle that rips everything apart. So when I saw that AMS idea I loved it right away.

Since it seems not clear that my first post contained a link to the AMS snag cutter, let me add the youtube video that demonstrates it here too:

Interesting concept. Even their main product for automatic filament replacement... Thought, that is somewhat poor man MMU, isn't it?

It's not an official product as far as I know.
Even though I'm a prusa fanboi through and through, their AMS is pretty good IMHO 🙂

I mean, It's obviously not going to solve everything that can go wrong pre-extruder, but it won't be in the way either.
And an out-of-filament nicely pauses the print until you can deal with whatever the cause was.

Totally get what you mean. When those spools start snagging, every print feels like a disaster waiting to happen. After a print finishes and the filament ejects on my MK4S+MMU3, I’m rushing to check it like it’s some emergency. It’s seriously stressful. Throwing them out seems wasteful, but sometimes it feels like the only option. A snag cutter for Prusa would be amazing. Something simple that fits on the Bowden tube and stops the filament from tangling would save so much headache. I really hope someone makes one soon.
