Should I care for licenses on printables?
Hello,
I am used to that contests winners are made on very different criteria than was announced, that I see many much cooler pieces there, ok, you have all rights to change the criteria and don't tell anybody - mechanical miracles was insane in this as only one awarded piece was in original announcement priorities. Most of contest pieces are junk anyway, which moved printables much closer to thingiverse or creative cloud - at times of Prusaprinters, it was a great site with minimum amount of junk models.
But the E3D Buggy contest moved the fun way further as 3rd place is violating the license of original remade model - it allows share without attribution. This is very hard, proly the biggest problem I have seen on the site so far. And it's easy to prohibit such a thing, or at least produce a warning to skip in cases where remix does not mean license inheritance. Way harder than calling Featured someone unable to measure and produce things compatible with what he says they are, not even fix them after numerous comments.
My opinion may not be right, but regret having so bad and right one too often. My models are things you can't see on any shelve. I create things that don't exist and that should be the…
RE: Should I care for licenses on printables?
Well,
in the meantime I stumbled upon the Honda issue where printables promised to try to reach Honda and find out what, why... It's been eight months without any update, so every user can make his/her conclusion from that. Mine is that protecting IP rights of big companies is way more important than own users and their IP - I can understand that from business perspective of printables, but it hurts my perception of Prusa research. It should be a big reason to tear it much further from the printer making company. Thus, I have removed all source OpenSCAD files from printables because I no longer trust the site. And I will think twice before ordering any more materials or giving suggestions to folks thinking about a new printer.
Good product is one thing, but every time one gives money to a company, he votes for it's policies - I don't buy many labels exactly because of that, so it's not that hard to put one more on the list.

RE: Should I care for licenses on printables?
Regarding the E3D Buggy contest, it appears that the third-place winner violated the license of the original remade model by sharing it without proper attribution. This is indeed a serious issue and should be addressed. It would be helpful if the contest organizers could implement stricter guidelines or at least provide a warning when remixing doesn't imply license inheritance.
It's also unfortunate when someone is featured despite their inability to produce accurate and compatible models, especially if they don't address or fix the issues pointed out by others. This can lead to frustration and a lack of confidence in the platform.
