remove SD card while printing

Hi

Can I remove an SD card during printing?
Reason: I want to add more gcode files while the printer is working and I don't want to wait until it has finished the print.

Have a good day - 😎
Peter

Not recommended. 💡 Buy another card?

The card is not the problem, it's not faulty.
I just wanted asked whether the card can be removed while printing without messing up the printing process - and the printed item.

Does anybody have real experiences with removing the card wihle printing?

the print moves are sequentially read off the card, your print will failbwhen the read buffer empties, shortly after removing the card

Never suggested it was faulty. What I was suggesting, obviously, was that if you buy another card you will eliminate your problem.

So why don't you try removing it and see what happens? Then you will have your answer, and a real experience at the same time 😛

Do not remove the card while printing. The print will fail. Doing that would be like ejecting a music CD from the player. the music will stop. This is not about a defective card. SD cards are very inexpensive nowadays. I recently purchased a 32GB micro SD card with adapter for about $8. I print/program with 3 or 4 different cards. I designed a small card holder to hold different cards safely as I swap them out. Walking back and forth from my laptop to my printer with the next card. Sneaker Net! old school term. 😀

I've got 3 cards set to autosync my gcode output folders automatically on insertion. I sync several hundred calibration prints in a mix of materials and nozzle sizes, as well as a common parts folder. A sync takes a few seconds. If I tire of fighting with my FlasAir card via wifi, the ready-to-print folder will sync.

Hi everybody

Thanks for all the answers.
It would have been nice if the Prusa read the whole file before start printing. But I guess that would cost too much memory, probably even more than the Prusa itself has...
So be it 😉

In theory :

You can remove the card if you pause the printing. Copying your files and plug in the card again. After then resume your printing.

I've never test this, but some time ago my card slot has bad connection to the card (old and worn card). The printer lost the communication with the card and stopped printing. After pull out the card and new inserting the card again, I can resume my printing without loosing data.

But I would not recommed this 😉

Have tested and it worked... I forgot to set my fanspeed to always on and by pausing the print, opening up the gcode  in Notepad++, and searching and replacing all M107 commands to ";M107" (commenting them out), ensuring i kept the same file length...i assume the printer keeps track of what line of code it was on (or lasted buffered), and then picks up from there when you resume print.

So keeping changes to a minumum is your best bet, but maybe it would work..haven't dove that far down this rabbit hole. Maybe i should, to test the bounds of whats possible for recovering prints. 😀

After my SD card delaminated and spilled its guts I switched to Octoprint and I'm loving it.
Install Octoprint to Memorystick instead of a SD card for faster operation.

YES YOU CAN

I just paused my print, pulled the card, looked at the GCODE file in Prusa to verify something, reinserted the card, pressed print and no problems.

RE: remove SD card while printing

It is not recommended to remove an SD card during printing as it may cause the print to fail or result in data corruption on the SD card. This is because the printer may be actively accessing the data on the SD card while printing, and removing it while it is in use could cause data to be lost or the file system on the SD card to become corrupted.

It's best to wait until the printing process is complete before removing the SD card. Some printers may also have a mechanism for safely ejecting the SD card before removing it, to minimize the risk of data corruption. If you need to remove the SD card for any reason during printing, it is recommended to turn off the printer first and then remove the SD card. how to download Meitu Mod Apk for Android

RE: remove SD card while printing

I have a FlashAir WiFi SD card on my MK3S. It shows up as a network disk drive on my Win11 pc.

I can erase and write files to the card while printing without any issues. Although I have never tried to erase or modify the active printing file while the printer is using it.

I'll try it this weekend but I suspect that will cause issues or corrupt the file.

...and when you end up with a bunch of SD cards all over your bench you might consider making one of these: https://www.printables.com/model/22600-sd-card-holder-rolodex-style

It is not recommended to remove an SD card from a 3D printer while it is actively printing. Removing the SD card during printing can lead to unpredictable behavior and could potentially cause the printer to stop functioning properly or even damage the ongoing print.

RE: remove SD card while printing

If any of you are experiencing corrupted data on your SD card due to this issue, you can restore the data using specialized recovery software. I have successfully done this myself, so I wanted to share this information with all of you.
