Prusament PETG 40%Magnetite filament as a radiation shield?

Hello,

I recently picked up a roll of this filament and was experimenting with it. Knowing that magnetite is used in the nuclear industry to enhance radiation shielding in concrete, I did some experiments.

It works well for shielding gamma radiation anyway. I wonder if this might be useful in lab settings somewhere? Being able to 3D print odd shapes with radiation shielding properties just seems like it might be handy.

So I thought I would share my experiments, just in case anybody finds this as interesting as I did.  I did a video on my experiments, if posting it here is inappropriate, go ahead and remove it.

Interesting video and ideas!  Thanks for sharing!

I know tungsten can be used for radiation shielding, but I’m not familiar with magnetite.  Prusa’s documentation states magnetite can be used for electromagnetic shielding, but doesn’t mention radiation shielding, per se.  Not sure exactly what difference that would make.

Have you done any comparisons with tungsten?  It is almost 5 times more expensive, though, so might not be worth it.
