Prusament Competitor

I just discovered this comparable filament on Amazon.  It has the same dimensional accuracy, attention to detail, and comes in hot pink!   https://www.amazon.com/SainSmart-Tangle-Free-Filament-Dimensional-Accuracy/dp/B07D35174J?ref_=bl_dp_s_web_5299213011

It's sponsored now, down from $30, which makes a spool fall one penny short of qualifying for Prime delivery.  It's amazing how cheaply printers can be but you get what you pay for.

Considering there was not a single picture posted, I think so. Those are referral links as well. Whoever posted it getting a (small) cut.

Interesting, SainSmart are the same folks who came out with their copy of the TS100  and TS80 portable soldering irons. I'm actually not sure of who first came out with them as they were copied so quickly by so many Chinese houses. (I think my TS100 is Mini brand.)

Their i3 printer that they have on Amazon is called "SainSmart x Creality Ender-3 3D Printer, Resume Printing V-Slot Prusa i3". Is it a SainSmart? Creality? Prusa? (Ok, I know it isn't a Prusa...)

Yea, it looks like a copy/paste company.  Regardless, it's good to see Prusa having global influence.  I'm really annoyed by my first non-prusament spool.  I hope Josef and everyone working for him are around for a while and don't mind paying extra if they continue to produce such wonderful things.

So the “tangle free” claim is no discriminator. No filament will spool will tangle unless the consumer screws up and mishandles the loose end.

Tight tolerances I like. That’s a measurable benefit.. Although I’m not sure where the point of diminishing returns kicks in.. For example, maybe belt stretchiness becomes a bigger factor once filament tolerance gets below +/-0.01, so hitting +/- 0.001 wouldn’t matter. Practically speaking

But why does a tidy wrap on the spool matter at all?  Besides being more ascetically pleasing that is. The Prusament spools are beautiful, and the transparent spools on these may be a huge “eye candy” improvement. But does it make a difference in the actual print? I don’t see how. True, a tidy wrap would allow for a smaller spool, but a spool that isn’t oversized enough has more problems with windings popping off the spool...

Hmm. I'm not about to order off a referral link, but it did just dawn on me that those are some spectacular colors for PETG.

Wow, just noticed the seller on Amazon claiming "Hi, the requirements of PLA and PETG for 3D printers [nozzles, hot bed temperatures, etc.] are similar, so printers which use PLA filament, also compatible with PETG filament." So except for the neurotoxins released when PTFE tubing breaks down at around 250C, they're saying PETG is fine in non-all metal hotends. Classy!

I tested a few filament brands out who claim they're producing with +/-0.02 mm. But so far only Prusament seems to keep that promise.

I saw a few such listings and they sometimes used the word "variance"... which is very different from a tolerance, but likely interpreted the same by a layperson. It's a free way to fluff the numbers and look better on paper!

On this listing I saw " +/-0.02mm error rate."... "error rate" is an unusual turn of phrase in this context, so you decide, just bad translation, or deliberate under the disguise of the former to avoid using a concrete term like "tolerance"?

It matters and it does.  My first purchased spool proved that with no user error.  The filament kept getting caught under itself and while it would eventually come free, it exerted enough force to bend the filament and cause underextrusion.

Then order off Amazon then.  I won't but like you said the colors are amazing but I'd rather sponsor the development of a trusted company.  I've baby-proofed my house with PLA and will order more now that Prusament is back on Amazon.  I'm just running out of ideas and don't want to wastefully print just for my entertainment.
