What do folks here think about a long term rating?

Something like:  "One year ago you downloaded X.  How do you rate it now?  Do you still use it?"

RE: Prusa Badges and Rewards... What you want to know!

Not a bad idea at all. In fact, I just created a new private collection of models I downloaded and actually still use. Mostly to have a quick way to check if there are updates because there's no update notification system on printable.

But then again, that only makes sense for functional models. I think a lot of people like to download and print decorative models (vases, Xmas tree baubles, etc), which are really "for the moment" and may not have much if any continued use.

I just wish these spammer would have enough brains to realize that posting makes is a stupid way to make small amounts of Prusameters, when the real payback is creating models that people download over and over again, month after month, because heaven forbid they're actually USEFUL!

Yes Prusameters are attracting the scammers, but Prusa isn't handing out vouchers without screening for scammers.  If scammers aren't getting a payout they'll take their scam elsewhere eventually.

When I say I'll design it myself that doesn't mean I'll automatically post it on Printables.  Sometimes I'll sell them through my Etsy store, or just keep it to myself.  Occasionally I'll share something, but I've slowed that practice a lot since I opened Etsy.  Etsy pays me at least $1000 a month.  Printables pays about $30 in filament.  There's no comparison.

I'm  not looking forward to the number of scammers once the fact that the Prusa Mini is available as a reward!

RE:

To be honest I have transitioned a while ago to simply using google image search, by using "whatever I want to find"+ "stl". printables doesn't rank terribly high usually but if there are good hits there, they also make it to the top. The search algorithm is totally way and beyond that of printables of course and it is also a true metasearch.

Where printables delivers quality you find it also that way. I know Catan designs best, as I uploaded one myself and the two top printables entries, as well as mine are somewhere around the top of the google search for "Catan 3d stl".

EDIT: Oh, I just realized that my entry is now even on page 1... at the very bottom of it but still. That probably explains why I saw a hike in the modest but steady traffic. Printables search probably isn't the reason which traditionally ranked it barely before complete off topic hits for whatever reason.

Okay… 10,000 points for a Mini. 10 points per make up to 100 points per month. 10,000 divided by 100 is 100 months, or 8.33 years.

PSA to anyone stupid enough not to get it:

DON'T POST MAKES OF 2 MINUTE PRINTS (or any) IF YOU WANT A MINI — unless you're happy printing silly makes for eight years.

Only way to get even close to 10,000 points in the Mini's lifetime is to create some very (!) popular models. I have a hard time seeing a simple sphere become very popular. And if you set up a scam operation of uploads and downloads of stupid models from multiple accounts, it doesn't take rocket science or a large staff to discover that quickly and deny your voucher request and delete the account.

But yes, obviously people are stupid enough and still try it, and we all have to suffer for it.

The number of likes and downloads was very consistent between spheres etc. - and matched the number of followers.

So open the list of followers and click on a couple, all new users, all following the same short list, all downloading the same list of spheres and posting identical makes and likes, clearly run from a script.

There's your list.

And the next with the same scam as the user "betaPeppe". Or is it the same with a new account?

@mg3d

Hopefully you can get back on track with your new account.

As the user address, needed for deliveries, is part of customer details and a high proportion of Printables users are Prusa customers we can only hope that hackers run into too many admin issues for it to be worthwhile.  Most organised hackers want more transferable rewards than a few metres of filament.

RE: Prusa Badges and Rewards... What you want to know!

I commented on the concept on page 4 of this topic(I think), but recent posts forced me to logon and post.

Any one that thinks testing is stupid, ridiculous, or a waste of time are... how to put this....WRONG! You, as designer, publisher, or seller of 3D printed things have a moral and maybe a legal obligation to test your "product" as well as to clearly describe how to construct and the use of such. As an example, I made a table ornament for Christmas and it was very nice. Why test? Because it fell on the floor and if a toddler, or pet had put the piece that broke off in their mouth, it was big enough to get stuck in the throat and I would have been responsible for injury or death. A small weak spot was the cause. The next iteration was tested by throwing it against the floor many times. It did not break.

What if the tip of that untested funnel broke off and caused damage or injury?

Many of the flash contest models are small and can be a choking hazard as well. That is for Josef to look into, what potential liability is his as promoter of the contests.

For those who got caught cheating, if you owned up to it, good for you. For the rest, stop complaining. Grow a pair and take your punishment like a woman. Only an <> will believe your excuses, and your mother is not an <>. You can call it 'gaming', 'cheating' or any other name, but it is STEALING from Prusa.

Let the arrows fly!

I presume, since you mentioned "funnel" and I think I'm the only one who has used that example, that you are talking to me?

I think we may be talking at crossed purposes here.

@Diem said all models should be tested for a year.  I replied that was ridiculous to test a funnel for that length of time (not that things shouldn't be tested).   Although when did pour stuff in one end and it came out the other I called that a "success".

I have no control over the material the user might choose to use or the use they have in mind.  Clearly using a vase mode printed funnel (which is not recommended but some "makers" have done), to pour acid is not sensible, however  I can't imagine a use for a funnel that might cause the tip to break off in such a way as to cause injury, perhaps you could enlighten me as to what might be a suitable test?    Certainly standing on it in the dark while walking barefoot could be an issue, but I don't need a test to show you that!

Offering models for download inherently takes away control of manufacture - a Christmas bauble (or funnel) printed on a less well tuned machine than yours or with wet filament that creates layer adhesion problems will give markedly different service in use and we have no control over that outcome.

I'm curious as to whether you tested your Personal Safety Signs beyond seeing if they'd print OK, and if so what your testing regime was?  That I think is the crux of my argument such as it is.  The chance of an injury being caused by the broken corner of a safety sign being hammered to a wall is greater than the tip of a funnel falling in one's eye I would have thought? 😉

Test by all means, do everything you can to design robustly and to ensure things fit and can be used - but test appropriately to the problem and over an appropriate time scale.

Cheers,

RE: Prusa Badges and Rewards... What you want to know!

Oh yes, the dreaded 'L-word' rears its ugly head.

I must admit that I have never thought about that angle WRT sharing 3d models.  I can't remember anyone ever bringing up the topic.

The closest I can remember is one instructor at our local makerspace admonishing the class to not do anything stupid, such as touch a hot nozzle with the finger or leave filament scraps or print scraps where an unattended toddler or pet could get them.

IANAL, but I would expect that anyone smart enough to operate a 3d printer is also smart enough to use the printed items responsibly and take care to keep small/pointy objects out of reach of a curious child or a curious cat.

Personally, I would never consider filing a suit against someone posting a model on the net, even if my use or misuse of the item caused some damage.  IANAL, but I always consider the shared prints to be as-is, where-is, and if I break them I own the pieces.

As far as my own liability, I would never post anything that was overtly hazardous.  I mean, yes, a toddler sticking the corner of a boxcar piece into the eye could cause some damage, but I would hope the person who downloaded the print had at least the common sense of a houseplant and watched the kids around hazardous items.

We do have personal liability coverage, in the event somebody tried filing a frivolous lawsuit, and here in the States at least most homeowner/renter policies do cover a modest amount of personal liability as well.

I personally think that if any activity is not expressly prohibited by a law or regulation it is absolutely legitimate to carry it forward.

But perhaps not moral, socially acceptable, neighbourly or even sensible?
