Product reviews

What products would you all like to see reviewed? I have used a number of filaments and add-ons for the Prusa.   What products do you want to know about?

RE: Product reviews
  • A bit dated now, but a comparison of the different flex sheets would still be interesting.
  • Head-to-head comparison of Bondtech extruder versus default.
  • Comparison of different fan duct designs.
  • Comparison of all your different printers. Same print, same settings, same filament, same lighting. Still have not seen a really good 602 comparison. Just make the same print with every new one and add it to the comparison gallery.

RE: Product reviews

Yes, I'd be interested in default vs. other (geared) extruders too, whether there is actual benefit in upgrading to those in terms of quality or reliability. If you put your own yhoughts as you probably have expetience with various parts, that would be great, we need people going back and forth with community, based on experience using printers and parts.

Long-term use of printers would be great too, for example common problems, how demanding is the maintenance of specific printer etc. There is not whole lot of videos on that topic, vast majority are reviews of new units.

Also would that be feasible with topic of for example "I bought/was given/was  "promoted" to maintain unknown printer, here I am standing in front of it, what should I do now?" There is constant stream of questions like this on Reddit, and many will come after Christmas (and later after people lose interest with their new yoys and give them away).

Charles, expanding a bit: I'd really like to see a consistent set of benchmarks applied to different printers and setups. Same parts, settings, etc. and a gallery of results. So many reviews are based on results in isolation, so it's hard to judge the results against others. Seeing some sort of consistency would be very useful.

RE: Product reviews

If folk do product reviews, my preference is for the review to be agnostic, present real data collected in a meaningful way, with all data available for review and comparison/verification.

With filament though, and this being a peer group, I will always be suspicious of reviews since most folk here are not scientists with tools to allow competent analysis of things like nozzle temperatures, bed temperatures, environmental conditions, multi-lot analysis, etc.   That said, a test of 20 filaments using the exact same gcode over a few days would compensate, but leave gaps for things like "but brand Y said they need 190c and brand Z demands 215c." ... so it becomes less obvious an A-B comparison can be made that is actually a true A-B comparison.

ps: Over in Hardware there is an ongoing thread on why you need geared extruders with 0.9 degree motors plus a bucket full of other sheet to get reasonable print quality.  A competent evaluation of all this would be great, but the flip side again is two printers will print differently regardless of specific extruder hardware just because one belt is slightly looser than the other printer.  So belt tension, bearing preload, and a host of other criteria will need to be monitored for a fair comparison.
