Printing with continues carbon / kevlar fibers by manualy adding them into the print?
Hi
Been trying some simple examples where i try to print my models with fibers, by manually adding them into the model, then pause at the "fibre" layer and lay down the fibers to the item (i tape it down with kapton tejp and then strech the fibre) , then continue to print.
I realize that the fibers is not really adhering well to the print, but i plan to maybe add some glue when putting in the fiber.
There must be someone else here that has tried this out i thought, are there some tips and tricks maybe for how to do this better?

Stefan of the CNC Kitchen YouTube channel has done some experiments that included adding carbon fiber to prints and injecting resin into FFFprints.

FWIW I'd use the 3d printer to create a mould to pour epoxy and hand layed kevlar.

yes that is my idea to do, but for simple models this would be cheaper and quicker . thanks

This could really help strengthen something like rocket fins.

The kevlar tow has some strech as it is twinned so not working to great. Will buy some carbon fiber tow that is uni fibre and try again.
Even without the glue the bonding is surprisingly good, i cant pull it out manually.

So i ended upp trying to do full composite mold parts instead with PLA as was a long term dream.
I am "shocked" how easy this was actually to do. This is only a test of a "pod" for an rc plane so just a trial.
Printed the mold with formfutura premium pla. Then sanded it down to 400 grit layer for about 1 hours with water sanding. Then just 3-5 layers of car wax as mold release. Did a pretty bad prep job an still the part came out good from the mold! (i am using an inflation bladder/baloon inside the mold to assure i get the perfect shape).
3D printing i so good, and compared to do this manually, and first make a plug and then make a negative from that one etc etc, this saves a ton of time. For sure, the surface is not as good as proper mold, but for smaller series, with proper mold release products, this would easy manage several parts in production..
