Printing defect

Greetings to All,

I have a lid that I have been printing for a while and everyone has the same defect that appears in the same horizontal plane, all the way around the lid at the same height on each print.  the defect appears to be for a couple of layers (.15 &/or .2) that creates an outward protrusion of approx .020", then everything goes back to normal size for the print.

I have printed this part using MK3, MK4 and MK4IS profiles thru Prusa Slicer.  Even changed up the profiles to try to figure out the issue.

Each time, before printing I check the slicer preview to look closely for the imperfection but have never found anything wrong, or visable.

Would welcome any ideas you may have.

Thanks to All,

RE: Printing defect

No pictures to understand the exact nature of the issues but from your description my money is on the well known "bulge" issue, which after all those years still hasn't been fixed.

More than 20 pages of discussion but no universal solution.

To quote @bobstro:

Happily, this was described as a “buldge” in an early post and that misspelling has made the problem very easy to search for.

There are several threads you might want to look through:

Thanks, will do the search.  Glad to hear it is a real problem, not something I am doing wrong.

RE: Printing defect

I read up on the "Buldge" concept, very interesting.

I re-printed my project using some of the recommendations from those articles and the buldge still exits.

After analyzing my design it is very clear that the buldge issue happens when there is a infill-to-full topping transition, such as the bottom of a box then transisitioning into the up-right wall configuration.

What ever the slicer is doing it should show up on the slicer preview, or in the g-code (which is well above my knowledge, so then the Prusa professionals could fix this issue.

As I only have one brand of printer has anyone tried the same design on a different printer brand while using a different slicer program?  Where the results the same?

RE: Printing defect

Have you uploaded the lid to Printables?

@eds_3d_odyssey, thanks for the reply.

My project is one of 3dPrinty designs (on Printable), one of the rectangular gift boxes.  The buldge issue is on the bottom part of the box, as well as, on the lid.

Interesting is the fact that the buldges do not appear on the 3dPrinty round gift boxes, even at areas where it should show buldges based on where the buldges appear on the rectangular boxes.

RE: Printing defect

Thanks for the link. I was searching for 3dPrinty. You have to search for 3d Printy or @3dPrinty.

Cool box, I added it to my list of things I need to print.

I have a similar problem with this model. I get a bad layer line in the same place every time I print it.

I have reached out to 3DPrinty to see if he has any ideas.  His pictures of the rectangular box look flawless.

@3dprinty replied to my question about lines I get on his gift boxes and lids.  His reply is as follows:

*Note: 3dprinty makes some great designs and has always allowed me to reach out and ask questions regarding specific designs.

"Yes, I have seen that issue. I'm not sure it has a name, but it's not uncommon for thin-walled designs to have artifacts like that when transitioning from an internal flat base to a vertical wall.

It might be a cooling/shrinking difference or possibly a little over extrusion. I see it come and go on these boxes depending on color... which to me points to shrinking differences that can change depending on filament.

If you use PrusaSlicer, or any other slicer that lets you merge in shapes, you can add a long rectangular box, angled 45 degrees to create a chamfer - a slow transition from floor to wall. In my newer designs, I started adding this by default whenever I could.

Yes, the lid is trickier, since in needs to fit around a tight lip on the base. The lid COULD be taller, so the chamfer has room, but that would look a little odd.

Shadows definitely make the problem appear worse - especially on light filament colors. I might be fooling myself, but I think there's more to it than just that. Some filaments just seem not to have the issue.

You're welcome to share that reply!

It's a sticky problem, which is why I've tried to model around it when I can :)"

If I have the time and money I would test several filament brands to see if there is much of a difference in the finished project.
