Printables.com - allow archival of models
Archive a model to remove it from search and profile view, make this a toggle (as AI or Political content), or show an archived banner on the preview & model page.
Model remains accessible through hard link, collections, and any other existing references.
What does this achieve?
Let's say there are 3 versions of a mobile stand, each an iteration on the previous version, making those obsolete.
As a creator, one has the option to remove those older models, or add a note to title or description, linking to the new model.
This is a lot of busy work and each creator can handle this differently, making it an inconsistent experience for the user.
I don't know if site improvements are discussed here, but I thought this would be a considerable improvement for everyone using the site.
Thanks for your consideration and happy holidays!
RE:
Or you can create a github repo for your models, publish just a latest and then have a link in the description that points to github and previous versions.
RE: Printables.com - allow archival of models
Or just add another versions of the model with a suffix or in new folders per version and add a changelog to the description.
This way people can get also older versions if required.
See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.
RE: Printables.com - allow archival of models
Thanks for contributing! In my humble opinion:
- @hyiger publishing to github requires us to depend on another platform for their features, which doesn't make sense. Printables provide features tailored for the content being shared, which aren't available on github, and it would require one to manage another platform.
- @_kaszpir_ I've addressed this in my initial post - I already do this, but everyone will have a slightly different way of approaching this, some may not bother at all. There is no way to search for models, sort by popularity and exclude old versions, so you may see a popular model version 2 at the very top, whereas a newer version is several rows down in search results.
RE: Printables.com - allow archival of models
OK, but you are not going to get anything accomplished on these forums except start a discussion amongst us. Prusa staff do not hang out here.
All of my models start on github, possibly because I'm a professional software developer and it just makes sense for me to put them there first.
